It is a slender black beaked white bird with long black legs and, in the western race, yellow legs. As an aquatic bird, it eats a lot of small insects in shallow water and land. It colonizes and breeds with a variety of aquatic birds, creating a structure like a tree, bush or reed scaffolding. After laying the combined blue-green eggs, they are given by both parents. At about six weeks of age, the young wings grow fully.

They are born in tropical wetlands from Europe, Africa, Asia and the tropics of Australia. A successful colonist, his range has gradually expanded to the north, with stable and self-sufficient bird numbers now also present in the UK.

In warmer locations, most birds are permanent residents; Birds from the north, including many European birds, migrate to Africa and South Asia. Birds may move north after the breeding season towards the end of the summer, and their proliferation trends may contribute to the recent expansion of the bird range.

Feathers were once used as a hat decoration in Western Europe in the 19th century, and were widely hunted for feathers, and in northwestern Europe the bird became extinct locally and became relatively rare in the south. In the 1950s, conservation laws were introduced in southern Europe to protect the species, and their numbers began to increase. At the beginning of the 21st century, birds began to breed again in France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Britain. It has also begun to colonize the New World; It was first seen in Barbados in 1954, and the first breeding took place there in 1944. The bird's global conservation status has been verified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as "least endangered".
