Pain has a way of forcing itself into our lives, often when we least expect it. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a major failure, or a period of doubt and uncertainty, we’ve all faced moments that leave a mark. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself: What do those experiences say about me?

Mark Manson’s quote reminds us that pain shapes us—it can either define who we become or what we choose to leave behind. So, how do we react to these defining moments?

Do we let pain paralyze us, keeping us stuck in a cycle of fear and avoidance? Or do we face it head-on, using it as fuel to grow and change? How much of your current self has been built from the struggles you’ve overcome?

At the same time, it’s worth considering the lessons pain teaches us. Do we take the time to reflect and learn from it? Or do we bury it, hoping it will disappear? Ignoring pain might feel easier in the moment, but does it ever really go away?

There’s also the question of identity. When something painful happens, do we let it define our story? Do we say, “This is who I am now,” or do we ask, “What can this teach me about who I want to become?”

And what about those moments we try to avoid entirely? Are there opportunities we’ve passed up because we feared failure or rejection? If pain shapes us, could avoiding it rob us of the chance to grow?

Ultimately, pain doesn’t ask for our permission to show up—it just does. But how we respond to it is entirely up to us. Will you allow it to break you or build you? Will it determine who you are—or who you refuse to be?

Take a moment to think about your most painful experience. How did it define you? More importantly, how will you let it define your future?
