SEC S17W1: "Let's Celebrate the Arts"

in hive-141434 •  7 months ago

Have you read the introduction paragraph of this contest well?
If not, I want you to read it again.

Art can be seen as the manifestation or expression of any creative and aesthetic activity, where it is possible to capture and transmit emotions and perceptions about the environment, experiences or what one imagines about reality for aesthetic and symbolic purposes.

How I wish for my mother to read these words. She always told us as kids that everyone is artistic. The way we pack our school suitcases, the way we do our homework, the way we dress, even the way we set the table. It all shows how we are expressing ourselves which is nothing else but art. Showing how we are living in the moment.

My Steemian friends know that I always say that when it comes to art and drawing, I stood last in line when this talent was handed out. What I have learned over the years is that we are all different. We are all unique. Life would have been pretty boring if it was only a kaleidoscope of drawings.

We are invited through this contest to show our “unique vision of the world through art.”

For me, there is only one way to comply with the contest, and that is through photography.

No, I am not a professional photographer, even though I wish I was like the Krystle Wright’s of the world, the extreme photographers. What I do know is that I am passionate about the photos I take.

My friends and family know me as a landscape photographer. I love the blue sky, the green grass, the “inviting” mountains, and the waves of the ocean. In other words, I love to take my photos outside. I always stayed away from portrait photography, as it just sounded too complicated for me. There are so many elements that you have to get right for that perfect shot.

Then one day, I discovered black-and-white photography. It changed my view of photography, and in particular portrait photography, completely. It is no longer me who must look for the photo and take it. Now it is me who must create the photo. Photography is now a challenge, but in the same breath, it is an art of expression that leaves me with nostalgic emotions.

For this contest, I want to celebrate art by showing you how I enhance and draw emotions by converting my mobile photos from color to black and white.

PHOTO 1

In the original photo, it feels like some of the details got lost. It was as if the shadows in this photo were absorbing the detail, making the swing the main focus point.

By turning the photo into a black-and-white photo and making the shadows darker and even more prominent instead of embracing the light, the focus is now on the children, bringing out those joyful smiles.

PHOTO 2

The backdrop of this photo is a painted canvas. I wanted to make the flowers more floatable to create the feeling of being free. I turned the photo into a black-and-white photo. The photo does look clearer, but are the flowers more floatable? It is an open debate. What I did manage to do was make my sister-in-law look thinner and younger. This is all due to the lighter stripes in her hair that catch the eye, moving it away from the face.

Little do I need to tell you that she had this photo printed on canvas and framed.

PHOTO 3

From all the thousands of photos I’ve taken, I will always return to this one. It is one of my favorites, even though the composition is wrong. I should not have cut a piece of the head off. However. I have learned not to delete any photos, as one day they will come in handy.

The name of this flower is Kosmos, and in the autumn, March, and April, they grow wild next to the roads in most parts of South Africa. They color the landscape white, pink, and burgundy.

For this exercise, I wanted to see if I could get more focus on my stepson and less on the flowers. Not only did I manage to do it, but with that, I opened his facial expression. He was a real rascal when he was small. Full of mischief, and that is clearly seen in the black and white photo.

PHOTO 4

Another favorite. It was a rainy day, and my daughter and her family were visiting us at our coastal home in Keurboomstrand. A big thing for the kids is swimming in the ocean. For three days in a row, we had no sunshine.
I caught my grandson standing at the window looking at the rain on the fourth day. The ocean was calling him. For a child of his age to stand like this was uncalled for.

For me, the black and white caught his emotions perfectly. The photo speaks for itself. I wonder...

PHOTO 5

Blue on blue. In the color photo, you see the blue sky reflecting in the waters of the Keurbooms River. For me, it is a beautiful photo, but not what I was trying to capture. I wanted the reflection to be the focus point and not the color.
Turning the photo into black and white and making the shadows darker gave me just what I was looking for a deeper reflection.

PHOTO 6

The color in the first photo was completely wrong. Yes, it was autumn, but still, the photo was too yellow. So much so that it was even reflected in the dress. The more I tried to fix the color, the less I got it right. Then I turned it black and white with a bit of silver. Perfect!

By doing that, I removed the background noise, made the facial expression clearer, and added emotion to the photo.
Who cannot love a face like that?

PHOTO 7

I am ending my post with a photo I took at "The Old Fort Prison" for prisoners of Apartheid. Photos of prisoners like Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Robert Sobukwe, Jacob Zuma, and Kgalema Motlanthe lined the wall. It was only later, when I got home, that I noticed the photo didn’t do justice to these apartheid heroes.

After some time, I had the perfect image that made these men “pop,” a black and white photo.

This, my friends, is where I end my story “with black and white, shapes, and virtual textures, through which I connect emotions and experiences that cannot be described with words” while I celebrate the world of art.

It is now for you to write your story.

Some really beautiful shots shared Pat! And yes, you are right... we are all very different, not only in the "who we are" but also in the "what we appreciate visually"... so, for me - there is no "wrong" when it comes to creative endeavors. Including the couple of things you mentioned regarding your photos (ie. cropping the head off etc.)

Art of any kind is such a personal process and admittedly, as hard as it can be to "let go" of this kind thought processing, I have learnt that it is necessary, because that is how you learn to free yourself from the constraints of social judgement or even internal judgement.

When you consider that there are no rules, no wrong or right - it opens the door to experimentation which ultimately leads to new discoveries and ultimately growth in your creative journey.

I think all your photos are absolutely beautiful.

Breaking the rules can manifest some beautiful creative creations too :)

Though most of my creative journey has been in design, traditional and digital illustration - I do love photography and thoroughly enjoy capturing beautiful things around me as well as trying out all sorts of weird and wacky things too, lol. As for black and white photography... I completely agree. There is just something magical about it... it embodies a sort of natural nostalgia and mood which is very special.

Lovely post xxx

Hope you have a beautiful Friday and weekend ahead!

Thank you for the great comment!

It is true that there is no right and no wrong when it comes to art—well, not if you are my mother. I can hear her telling me to never use even numbers in art. I don't think I will ever forget those words. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Design and digital illustration. My brother had a company right there on your doorstep many years ago. His clients were Vodacom, Telkom, Ask Africa, and yes, Adidas South Africa. He packed his bag and is now the editor of a prestigious Asian magazine.
He now takes photos of places where brands like Rolex, Cartier, Roll Royce, etc. pay him to go.

I keep my fingers crossed that your designs and digital illustrations also pave the way for you! 🤞🏻

PS: Don't miss the series "Photographer"
It is mind blowing!

I can actually relate to that... except it was not told to me by my mother, but rather something I learnt and then had to unlearn... not so much about "even numbers" precisely - but about being obsessive with things like spacing, balance etc. Don't get me wrong, it is a skill set which has greatly complimented my traditional art journey... but in the beginning, the designer in me really struggled to let go and just "do whatever".

Eventually, I managed to strike a healthy balance between the two and now the design experience I have "compliments" the art, rather than "overriding it".

I don't blame him hahahaha!!! What a bunch of pain in the arse clients to have, lol. Big names are always the most painful and generally the worst payers too - especially here in SA as you are likely familiar with yourself, lol.

I keep my fingers crossed that your designs and digital illustrations also pave the way for you! 🤞🏻

That is very sweet of you, thank you! I don't actually do design work anymore - I sold my business a couple of years before covid hit (thank goooooodness!!!!) and my art does well, but as any artist knows well - it is seldom a consistent stream... it has wonderful highs... and then NOTHING for what feels like an eternity lol.

Had not heard of that! Thanks for the recommendation - I will definitely take a look!

How lucky you were to sell your business before COVID!

Art, acting, and music are the three most difficult careers to be in.
With AI, I'm sure we are going to add many more to the list.

Now I will have to change my blessings to: best wishes for being at the right place at the right time. 🙏

How lucky you were to sell your business before COVID!

I count my lucky stars for that every single day!!!! I was a small concern and not in the position to carry several salaries as well as myself whilst earning absolutely nothing!

Art, acting, and music are the three most difficult careers to be in.
With AI, I'm sure we are going to add many more to the list.

So very true and incredibly sad re. AI. Sure, I use it myself for certain things and yes, it has been a part of the design field for many years already, but the way it is just taking over now... it is somewhat disheartening.

Now I will have to change my blessings to: best wishes for being at the right place at the right time. 🙏

Guao. Muy merecido tu premio. Todas las fotos me encantaron. Siento una atracción especial por las fotos en blanco y negro y en color sepia.

Las historias detrás de las imágenes son también fascinantes. Un abrazo fraterno.

Awh! Thank you my friend! 🎕
Your kind words warmed my heart this morning

Photography is one of the ways to preserve our age long Beaty of arts. So many of them would have been lost but thanks to photography.

These are beautiful artistic photographs you’ve shared with us . Thanks ma’am and greetings from this other side of Africa.

Photography is something that is with us all the time, every second of the day. We don't even need cameras. We have brilliant minds that capture every moment for us.
To be able to store these images for later is a privilege that we must not forget.

Thank you for the visit!

Your welcome ma’am 🤗

It is so true what you are saying that art is everywhere around us.
We just need to look at the creation and be in awe. Us, the plants, the animals of the world, even the small ant are all art in progress.

Thank you for the visit and for liking my photos. 🎕

There is so much of beauty of art that we can actually comprehend most of the time. It holds the secret to making us to discover something's that we might not discover in our world. You are also able to take amazing shots and photography I must confess. The black and white background brings out the true beauty of this pictures

And another compliment from you! Wow!
Thank you! ☕

There is actually a word for the beauty of art, "aesthetics."

Dice que no es fotógrafo pero sus fotos son fantásticas, sabe hacer buenas fotos y sabe detallarlas muy bien.

Felicidades y éxitos en el concurso

Thank you! It is nice to get a compliment from you young man! ☕

I also really like to take pictures and I'm not a professional photographer either, rather a photo blogger)). And I also really like black and white photography, it really allows you to emphasize the details that are unclear in color photos, black and white gives depth and sharpness and this can really be strengthened or, on the contrary, weakened when converting a color image to black and white.

Ah!!! That is a nice description for us, photo bloggers! I love it!
It is true what they say after all, less is more. Even when it comes to our photos. (•ิ‿•ิ)

💝💝Sukses ibu patjewell.💌💌😘😘

Thank you! 🎕

I have oftentimes seen your magic with words, but this is the first time I witnessed your photographic skill, and your editing left me awestruck. My best wishes for the contest!

Okay, you made my toes curl with your kind words.
Thank you! ☕

Oh, my beautiful God!

What an artist. I am not a professional photographer, not even a tiniest bit. But I liked what I saw. The way you have described the teeny tiny details of your edits and processing made me awestruck.

If I could only give you 20 out of 10.

Black and white has its own charm. The classic, the timeless.

Awh, thank you! Not only for the visit and the engagement, but also for your kind words. You even made me blush!

It is the one thing I would LOVE doing when we fully retire, tour, and take billions of photos.

I started with a book not so long ago, Windpomp Stories. It is a book about a type of windmill you get all over South Africa, mainly on farms, and the stories they and their owners tell. It is my dream to finish it.

Your are most welcome.

And

If it's not too much of an ask, maybe you can consider this:

Apologies for not replying to this part! I think I am a little phased out today. I'm tired, I guess...

How very interesting. I do hope that you complete it, and when it becomes the bestseller, don't forget to remember me. My best wishes for you.

Sure! Let me see what I can come up with. (•ิ‿•ิ)

I mean, uptil the payout of this post, i.e., Saturday, 13th April.

Thank you for the visit! It is appreciated!

Owh such a pleasure to know that.. hope someday it will come true.. we are working together..

You've done a great job and written a wonderful post. At the very beginning, I thought that you decided to write about me. :)

God did not give me the talent of an artist but introduced me to photography as a child. But then there was a big period when I couldn't do photography, but Steemit told me it was time to do photography again.

Haha! I am glad I got you thinking.

Steemit has made us do weird and wonderful things. I've learned so much about myself since my return. I was caught up in the corporate world for way too long.

Cheers, Steemit! 🥂

PS: You can take beautiful photos!

Art is really a beautiful thing because it always tend to show to our world a lot of things that we can't actually see and imagine. So much that we can see in the beauty of art and that is why I always respect the world of art. Trust me it is a beautiful thing. I can see the picture of nelson Mandela in one of those photographs you took. Trust me they are really looking so beautiful and growing up many years ago, Nelson Mandela is my role model and even till now, he has so much that I actually want to learn and copy from beyond doubt. Black and white background never disappoint also. It always tend to bring out that true beauty in pictures much more than we can ever imagine of. Do you know that most of the time I always prefer the black and white background picture.

I agree with your statement that black-and-white photos never disappoint.
No matter if they are set to be light or dark, they will always tell a different story.

Thank you for the visit and the engagement!
It is appreciated!

You have written really well about art and how influential it is to us.
Sharing this wonderful pictures of balck and white reminds me of the good old day that the world was still a better place to be unlike now.

Awh thank you! Not only for the visit and the comment but also for you kindness.
I agree with you, the one you like is a nice photo. (•ิ‿•ิ)

My pleasure 😍 🙏

Amiga, beautiful art you developed. Through the black and white you enhance the beauty in the photos so much more. Your art is worthy of celebration. Congratulations, you transformed beautiful photographs into art that speaks for itself.
Thank you friend for the invitation.
A hug for you.

Hello and thank you!!
I am glad you found my post and that you've enjoyed it.
I cannot wait to see your entry!

Hi, hey ok it's nice to have a hobby, I also like to take pictures and I take advantage of every corner of my humble town, sometimes I think I've photographed everything but it turns out I haven't haha fortunately for me, there is always something to photograph here.

The change is noticeable, you wanted to highlight particular details and you did it, they look very nice with that charming old touch. And I will surely see more of this art that you are so passionate about, see you soon.

Haha! I know exactly what you are saying. I also often wonder what is there still to take but every time I find something new.
Thank you for the visit and the engagement! 🎕
