Surveys conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in four regions, including Fukuoka and Ishikawa prefectures, revealed that as of 2022, 12.3% of residents aged 65 and above are suffering from cognitive impairments. From this data, the Ministry estimates that around 4.43 million elderly people in Japan are affected by cognitive impairments, which equates to 1 in every 8 individuals.
The Ministry forecasts that by the year 2050, the number of elderly individuals in Japan with cognitive impairments might increase to 5.86 million. The Ministry has acknowledged that the intensifying aging process puts everyone at risk for cognitive impairments and has committed to promptly advancing relevant policies.
