What does giving flowers mean to you?

Flowers.
This word means something entirely different to the average Nigerian. If you know flowers to be those colourful plants with lovely sepals, petals and stamen or pistils in your backyard or garden, then I will tell you what an average Nigerian thinks of the word “flower”.

First off, we have two seasons — the wet (rainy) and dry (harmattan) seasons. During the wet season, lovers of horticulture, particularly the haves, plant their flowers around their homes and offices. This adds beauty to their environments until the harmattan comes and everything looks placid.

Flowers to us are for aesthetics and if you are gifted A REAL ONE, then the giver must either not be a Nigerian or was trying to copy the Western culture.

Nigerians are just unique.
While others around the world give their spouses real roses and orchids, we give our lovers bouquets of money.

Yes, you read this right!

Our girls love this more and would awn over it more than they would if you sent a bouquet of roses with a sweet note. You can ask around.

Have you ever given or been given flowers? Tell us about your experience.

I have never received any flowers myself, nor have I gifted them to anyone. So how do we show we care?

We show that we care by buying expensive gifts, showing up for your events in beautiful apparel, praying to heaven to shower its blessings on you and connecting you to the who-is-who of society.

But I digress a little.

Gifting of flowers is rarely our thing, except if it is a wedding or Valentine's celebration and this happens ceremonially between lovers.

Give a flower, whether natural, artificial or drawn, and tell us why you have selected that person to receive it.

With my understanding of the significance of flowers globally, and how they symbolise friendship, love and care, if I were to give a person a flower, then it would be a fabric art-made flower. It would be dedicated to the Steemit curators and community members who have supported me throughout my Steemit journey from July 2021.

To say thank you for your warm support and encouragement, I made a fabric art specifically for you.

The materials used were:

  • brown cardboard;
  • black linen;
  • orange ankara material
  • glue;
  • tissue paper wrap
  • pins and;
  • Purple embroidery yarn.

It is a simple art that took me less than 30 minutes to complete.

1. First, I cut out a square and 5 small leaf-like shapes from the cardboard paper. I also cut out a small circle for the middle.2. Next, I cut out the linen to cover the cardboard paper, leaving extra edges by the sides to wrap at the back.

When done, I placed my leaf-like cardboard papers on my Ankara fabric and traced out 5 leaves.

The leaves from the Ankara fabric were glued to the top of the cardboard paper. These alongside the embroidery yarn and circle were placed on the black surface.

When I got the design I needed, I glued them to the surface.

To give it that lovely finish, I traced the embroidery yarn around the flowers.

Now, my flower is ready for my Steemit friends and curators.

PS The orange fabric was carefully chosen to indicate the new and old. If I understand spring so well, then it is a season when new plants spring out. So the combination of yellow and red to form orange symbolises the intertwining of the old and new seasons to create something new.

I invite @yhudy @emily08 and @joymm to join the next contest.
