A small group of worshippers will attend Ramadan night prayer, Tarawih in the Great Mosque of Mecca on Tuesday, April 13th. This is the second year that Ramadan in Saudi Arabia will be observed under coronavirus precautions.
Nearly 2 billion Muslims worldwide will mark the first day of Ramadan after an official sighting of the new crescent moon.
Ramadan, considered to be one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, is believed to be the month when God revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset every day of the month.
Usually packed with worshippers from around the world, Saudi Arabia decreed the holy mosques of Mecca and Medina would remain closed to prevent an increase in infections. Only vaccinated or immune worshippers will be allowed to enter the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. A fine will be handed to people who try and enter the Grand Mosque in Mecca without a permit.
The nighttime prayers during Ramadan, including Isha’a, Tarawih, and Qyam will be combined and will not exceed 30 minutes in all of the mosques across the Kingdom. Scholars across the globe have called for Muslims to pray from home.
