... ruled India for about 400 years before advent of British rule in india. Mughal kingdom(India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan) established by Babar in 1526 and then succeeded by several other rulers of whom Shah Jahan was prominent. Shah Jahan is the one who built the Great Taj Mahal which is one of the seven wonders of the world during 1631-1648 in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Mughals had established Agra as their capital city which got over populated with time. Shah Jahan decided to shift capital from Agra to Delhi in 1638 as Waters of Yamuna river were more navigable around Delhi and also it is better connected with world and was relatively less populated when compared to other cities of that time.

Red fort was built after shifting the capital from Agra to Delhi and it served as shelter and epitome of Mughal architecture for more than 200 years. Shah Jahan with his wide exposure of art and culture and architecture has learnt from mistakes of building of Agra Fort and has done innovative planning in setting up this massive structure. Built out of Red Sandstone, it is famous for its massive enclosing walls and is as strong as the fort that it was on day one. With beautiful gardens and fusion of different traditions, it's designs were later served as base for many other similar constructions all across India
