Botticelli, The Annunciation, ca. 1485-92, Metropolitan Museum of Art

There is more than just courtly reverence in the poses of the Angel and Virgin Mary. One might be tempted to think that the architecture with these massive pillars dividing the room is more important, and the oh, so new, perspective. The painting is so simple, there is not much to look at, but that's not true of course. Look for all the details that you see when you zoom in the fingers of Virgin Mary holding her robe and a similar but different gesture of the angel, the landscape in the window, diaphanous textiles in the Virgn Mary's part of the room with obvious, or maybe now not so obvious, symbolism.
