In this Newsletter I will present some photographs of a carpenter bee that lives in several South American countries and that fulfills the role of a full-time pollinator, since it feeds on the nectar of flowers (especially the Passionflower) and collects pollen from many other plants.

The female is dedicated to opening a hole in the trunks of trees or thick wood in the garden to shelter at night and inside the galleries she can place her eggs to reproduce. The photographs correspond to the Carpenter Bee Species Xylocopa augusti that shares a taxonomy with 30 other subgenera of carpenter bees.

Its body is jet black and somewhat hairy, especially on the lateral edges of its abdomen, which are reddish-brown in color that can resemble copper. It measures between 3 and 4.5 centimeters long and its flight is very fast and noisy.
