Local varieties of paddy: 10,000 indigenous varieties of paddy have been lost from Bangladesh.

The Department of Plant Breeding has played a significant role in the development of inorganic rice tolerant varieties such as salinity, flood, drought, cold spell etc. The Department of Plant Breeding has successfully developed the Marker Assisted Breeding method by introducing various varieties such as flood, salinity, cold tolerant and disease resistant genes into modern high yielding rice varieties.

Scientists in the department are supervising Masters and PhD students as part of the creation of skilled manpower and are regularly training students, farmers, NARS and foreign scientists, extension officers and NGO workers on modern rice varieties and breeding methods. The department has published scientific research papers, annual reports, research booklets, leaflets and bulletins of the released species.

The biggest achievement of the Plant Breeding Department of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute is the innovation of high yielding modern rice varieties suitable for unfavorable and unfavorable environment. Bangladesh Rice Research Institute has so far developed 108 (101 inbred and 6 hybrid) high yielding modern rice varieties.
