Is a favourite film and a film I will watch over and over the same thing? Not necessary, not to me what we watch depends on more than one factor.

About A Boy (2002) is part of my video collection. Greatly filmed, super actors and of course the English language sounds like a song to my ears.

About that boy...

Oh, gosh, if I see him my heart bleeds. Mom, it's fine you have a certain lifestyle, are a vegetarian and bio+ fanatic but you aren't a sunshine and do not only harm yourself but above all your child! The father of this boy, where is that lousy fake-hippy hiding? Man, you are an adult what is wrong with you?

About a Boy is about Marcus a lonely boy, a boy who can only rely on himself. He lives with his mom and if you see what she looks like and how she's dressed... To me, it's a miracle that this woman still has a best friend. Long before you see her drown in tears you feel the heavy load of her life pressing on the twelve-year-old's shoulders. How to deal with a depressed mother whose daily task is crying and who can't see a bit of sunshine? Someone should force her to eat meat, and liver, and tie her to a tree to get fresh air and the necessary vitamin D3 since insufficiency causes depression. This mom even tries to commit suicide more than once and no longer cares if her son finds her dead.

The boy, does the house chores and even at school his life sucks simply because of the way he looks (is dressed) and the way he behaves. This boy would be the perfect victim to be caught by a paedophile, men who hunt for a certain type of children, the lonely and neglected ones.

This boy meets a young man Will. A rich one, who states 'every man is an island'. I agree with him by the way.
Will lives a scheduled life - blocks of 10 minutes and I can't help admiring him for it.
If Will likes it or not he's dragged intoMarcus' life a boy who even wants his mom to have a friend. He doesn't care about differences and is blind to ranks and status. Marcus figures it out and knows how to stay alive by surrounding himself with people he might not always rely on but can force himself upon.
Here we meet the real boy, the one carrying responsibility for his ill mother but also solving his loneliness.
Will is his harbour, the place where he can relax, watch the telly and laugh.
Despite all the sadness this film makes you laugh. Mom's lifestyle, the bio-baked bread as hard as a brick, the generosity and hospitality of Will together with his charm and responses can only make you like this adorable man who is far from a materialist.
