I remember last year, I used to make my health related posts in the campus connect community, too bad they had to power down.

Anyways, this is my first post in this community and I am happy to be making a post here. For this post, I will like to make an entry for a contest organized by sir/ma @franyeligonzalez. In this contest, we are tasked to talk about our previous lifestyle based on self medication.

Before we begin the post, please pull a cushion, sit back, relax and grab a drink.

Before i start answering the questions, let's see what self medication really means shall we?

Self-medication is a process by which an individual independently medicate themselves either by injection or by pills without the prescription or supervision of a doctor or health personnel. (This definition is constructed by me when writing this post).
A person is said to be doing self medication when they take paracetamol without the aid, prescription or supervision of a doctor. Self medication is a very dangerous act and it can pose a threat on the individuals life.

Basically, these drugs we are taking to get well are chemicals which a toxic to the body, however, a way was found out in other to utilize the toxicity and form risk-free treatment to ailments when needed. However, when an individual go through self medication, the dosage taken mostimes maybe higher than the normal dose required by the body to cure the illness, and as such, the toxicity of the medication will be increased due to overdose which will in turn cause seriuos side effects.

*****I love medical profession because of he physiology of how things occur in he body*****

HAVE YOU SELF-MEDICATED AT SOME POINT IN YOUR LIFE? IF THE ANSWER IS YES, TELL US WHY. (TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE)

Well yes, I have self medicated at some point in my life and I'm currently doing it but with medications I know about.

I am a student Nurse however being a student in Nigeria is as hectic as it could be and as such, students fall for different diseases. I am no different and there was a time I fell for Malaria. I had knowledge about the disease condition, and I could treat myself independently of a doctor's watch. All I did then was to tell my doctor about what I'm facing, afterwhich I asked my collegue to run a vital signs check up on me, then determined the dose I could take after doing some pharmacological calculations.

DID SOMEONE TELL YOU TO TAKE THAT OR THOSE DRUGS? DOES THAT PERSON HAVE MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE?

Well, nobody told me to take the medication because I already have the knowledge about both the disease condition and the medication used to combat it. The only thing I did was to tell my doctor about what I was going through so that he will be able know what happened to me is anything had happened.

WHY DIDN'T YOU GO TO A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

Like I said above, I had the knowledge of what I am combatting and I know the signs and symptoms. I just had to tell my.doctor about it so that he will be aware of what was happening. Also, going to a hospital for.treatment in my country is expensive. Thanks to.the knowledge I have, I had to self medicate.

HOW DID IT GO WITH THAT MEDICATION? CAN YOU TELL US THE NAME AND WHAT YOU USED IT FOR.

Personally, I don't really like giving out these type of informations about medications so that someone will not go ahead and try it without the doctors prescription but for this contest sake: The name of the medication was Emal, taken in a dose of 150mg intramuscularly dly X 3/7 and I used it to treat malaria afterwhich I began to take multivitamins to boost my immunity.

Do you know the risks of self-medicating?

The risk of self medicating is very intense and could lead to drug overdose and ultimately death.

DO YOU THINK THAT SELF-MEDICATION IS GOOD OR IS IT NECESSARY TO GO TO A PROFESSIONAL IN THE AREA?

Well, so far, from the start.of this post, self medication is not good and can pose a very dangerous threat to a victim. However I recommend that each and everyone see their doctor when anything goes wrong in their health because the doctor have a very good knowledge about he anatomy and the physiology of the human body and they are the best in the management of the human body.

Now, the question is: what of "where there is no doctor?"

Well, in a situation where there is no doctor, in other to save a life, I'll advise to get a little knowledge either from google or from a book or from anywhere about disease conditions and ways to treat them. However, in the administration of the medication, I will advice to give a lesser dose to what is prescribed in the place you got your knowledge from, after which you take the individual to the hospital for further care. Don't forget to tell the doctor what you gave.

Well, that will be all for this post, I really enjoyed writing it, hope.you enjoyed reading?
