SKIN HEALTH, CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Any action done regularly, repeatedly and automatically, usually without awareness is known as a habit. We all have different habits - most people cannot do without taking a cup of coffee every morning; some others have made exercising a habit and they may feel very uneasy if they are not able to satisfy these desires. These daily routines grow to become habits and then addictions. Likewise, maintaining a healthy skin has become a daily routine for most people but some set of people find it difficult to practice and maintain this lifestyle. A healthy-looking skin is the pride of any individual. It boosts confidence and self-esteem and it brings out the true beauty of any person.
Everyone wishes for a glowing skin but it's never enough to just wish, you have to work for it by applying these safe health tips that I have recommended:
WASH YOUR FACE
Source
This is the first and most important step to take if you really want a healthy skin. We have to work hard everyday to earn a living and our body secretes sweat in the process, leaving our skin wet and oily. Sweaty and oily skin allows dirt and dust to stick to our skin and this causes breakout of acne. Excess sweat and oil also blocks the skin pores and this is very bad for your skin. Most ladies find it difficult to wash off their makeup before going to bed- this bad habit can damage your skin. It is important to wash your face with lukewarm water every morning and every night before going to bed. Most people prefer to use mild facial cleansers instead of just water. I do not usually advise people to use regular soaps for facial cleansing because they may dry out the skin. The skin needs a little amount of oil, so it's important to make sure that you avoid products that will totally dry out your skin.
USE ANTISEPTICS
To maintain a healthy skin, we have to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms that cause eczema and acne. This can be achieved by using antiseptics. Anticeptics could be either mild chemicals or strong chemicals that have been diluted and can be used on the surface of the skin. Today, we have so many anticeptic soaps that can kill up to 99.9% bacteria on the skin. Apart from antiseptic soaps, there are antiseptics in liquid form. You can get one for yourself from the store, but you must be careful to make the right choice. Here in Nigeria, the most popular antiseptic product we have is Dettol.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET
Source
The skin is an outer covering for the body and in order for the skin to continue to act as a barrier, preventing the entry of microorganisms into the body, you must eat the right food. Sufficient intake of food rich in vitamin A can improve your skin appearance. Diet that lacks Vitamin A leads to flaky or dry skin. Your diet should consist of fruits and vegetales, egg yolk, fish-liver oil, palm oil and milk. Eating this kind of meal regularly helps to keep your skin fresh and glowing. Most people believe excess intake of sugary food and food that contains fats and oil will make them look fresher, but I do not believe this theory. Fats and oil contain a very little amount of oxygen but your blood needs enough oxygen to keep your skin healthy. Also, excess sugar and fat in the body only makes you obese and not healthy. So, try out a new way of eating today; add fruits and more vegetables to your meal.
DO MORE EXERCISE
Our everyday hustle stresses us a lot. Too much stress makes the skin very oily and you know what happens when your skin becomes too oily. One good way to relieve yourself of this stress is to exercise. Exercise also increases the flow of blood round the body. Blood carries the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy and oxygen too. This is what helps to nourish the skin cells which in turn keeps your skin healthy. Most importantly, it increases your chances of staying and looking younger.
USE MOISTURIZERS
As you go through a lot of stress everyday, your body loses its water content, leaving you dehydrated. You need moisturizers to constantly keep your skin hydrated and you also need it to prevent water loss through the skin. If you have a dry skin, you should use moisturizers as it helps to prevent dry, flaky skin. Do you want your skin to glow even in old age? Then use good moisturizers because they reduce wrinkles and facial lines.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Doctors recommend that you take at least four litres of water everyday. Water keeps you hydrated and refreshed. Dark areas around the eyes and nose are as a result of dehydrated skin. As I earlier mentioned, your skin loses water while you work and it is only fair that you replenish what is lost. Cultivating the habit of drinking the right quantity of water everyday will bring about a healthy and glowing skin.
USE SUNSCREEN
Too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause a lot of damage to your skin. People who are always exposed to the heat of the sun suffer skin discoloration. To avoid or reduce the effect of the sun's rays, it is necessary for you to get a sunscreen. Sunscreen protects you from the sun's harmful rays.
POINTS TO NOTE
In a bid to solve their skin problems, people make little mistakes that can make their problems even worse. If you must maintain a clean and clear skin you must avoid these mistakes:
- Applying lemon juice: It contains Vitamin C and citiric acid that can actually make your skin more attractive but it contains too much acid. It may cause irritation or skin dryness.
- Applying toothpaste: you might be tempted or maybe adviced to dry out a new pimple on your face by applying toothpaste on it overnight. But doing this will cause skin dryness and irritation.
- Using sugar and olive oil as face scrub: Olive oil is good for your skin but it is too thick to use on your skin. It leads to clogging of skin pores. Using sugar on your face as face scrub can irritate your skin and cause further spread of acne because it is too harsh for your skin. Facial scrubs are supposed to be mild.
- Applying garlic: It is much better to dilute garlic before rubbing it on your face. Using it without diluting it first can cause other skin problems.
- Picking at acne: You should learn to keep your hands away from your face if you have pimples on your face. Touching your face everyday now and then can cause them to spread even more. You may be tempted to pop a pimple but you must by all means resist this temptation because popping them will give you wounds and these wounds will then turn into scars. Instead, you should treat them with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-irritation facial creams available at pharmacies. They help to combat microorganisms that cause skin infections.
