This is why day by day the restrictions are increasing in America that people should not smoke where other people are. US federal law prohibits people from smoking in public buildings, and smokers, including the Voice of America office itself, are not allowed to smoke a certain distance outside the building.

Not only do many states follow the same federal anti-smoking laws that were passed a decade ago, some states have even enacted stricter regulations. An increasing number of hospitals and companies do not hire smokers. Tennessee Memorial Hospital now performs routine lab testing on job applicants. If the test shows nicotine, then the job is rejected.
