Herzliches Hallo an alle,

wie ihr vielleicht mitbekommen habt, habe ich zu Hause ein NAS am Laufen, welches zusätzlich als Medienserver dient. Für letzteres finde ich immer "neue" alte Filme und Serien auf DVD's die ich gerne auf meinem Medienserver haben möchte, weil ich sie früher immer gerne geschaut habe ;)

Aus Langeweile ging ich letztens auf Amazon und stöberte ein Bisschen. Dann fiel mir ein Anime ein, den ich damals, zwar selten, weil ich das Programm des Senders nicht kannte, schaute. Ich suchte nach einer Komplettbox dazu auf Amazon und fand die einzelnen Staffel-Boxen, plus eine Box mit allen drei dazugehörigen Filmen. Nice!

Was nicht nice daran war: Der Preis. Ca. 50€ pro Box, mal etwas mehr, selten etwas weniger... Also, zusammengerechnet: 50€ x 7 Staffeln + Filmbox = um die 400€! Ohne Versand...

Also, was tun?

• Auf die Serie verzichten? Ungern.
• Monatlich Eine nach der Anderen kaufen? Und dann ist eine ausverkauft, bevor der nächste Gehalt gekommen ist? Nope, keine Option!
• Meinen Vater fragen? Top! Diese Option nehme ich!

Somit fragte ich ihn und gab noch die Optionen hinzu, dass ich ihm 50€ monatlich zurückzahle, oder dass er nur einen Teil übernimmt und ich den Rest. Doch er übernahm alles! Also alles... Der Endbetrag war dann doch etwas über die 400€ plus kam noch der Versand hinzu. Somit bezahlte ich diesen Teil mit meinem Geld. Aber ich bin ihm sehr dankbar, dass er mir den Großteil abgenommen hat :)

Gestern dann kamen 6 Staffeln plus die Filmbox an (keine Ahnung, warum die 7. Staffel separat versendet wurde... Amazon halt^^). Meine Freundin schaute, ich erläuterte ihr, dass mir mein Vater bei der Finanzierung geholfen hat und sie war empört... Sie konnte es nicht fassen, soviel Geld für DVD's auszugeben^^

Klar, es ist viel Geld. Besonders, wenn man die DVD nur einmal nutzt, um eine grauzonige "Raubkopie", also eine Digitalisierung der DVD, anzulegen, weil es die Titel legal nicht als .mp4, oder welchen Format auch immer, zum Download gibt.

Das finde ich, ist ein großer Fehler: Es werden DVDs aus Plastik zu Haufen produziert, wenn es lediglich eine digitale Version brauchen würde. Und dann noch das Lustige daran: Es gibt Medienserver-Software. Dafür braucht man aber Filme und Serien in digitaler Form. Die es legal einfach nicht gibt! Umgehen des Kopierschutzes ist laut Urheber-Gesetz illegal. Wie also soll ich meine Filme und Serien digital für meinen Server erhalten? Klar, wenn du privat deine DVDs digitalisierst wird niemand draufkommen, kannst du also machen, ist irgendwo ein Graubereich. Wenn du jetzt anfängst die digitalen Kopien zu verteilen, dann ist das eine Straftat! Verständlich auch, aber warum darf ich die DVD, die ich von meinem Geld gekauft habe und physisch bei mir zu Hause habe an sich nicht digitalisieren? Sprich tun was ich damit möchte?

Dasselbe gilt übrigens auch für das Modden von Spielekonsolen. Ich mein, ich kaufe mir eine Wii, möchte mehr von der Fanbase kreierten Lieder für das Spiel DJ Hero, die bekomme ich aber nur auf eine gemoddete Konsole drauf. Warum also, darf ich sie nicht modden!? Wegen der Umgehung der Sicherheitseinrichtungen, dies ist strafbar, und dient im Gesetz dazu die Spiele-/Konsolenhersteller zu schützen. Was auch irgendwo verständlich ist, weil es durch Modden der Konsole ein Einfaches ist, Raubkopien von Spielen draufzukriegen. Irgendwo verständlich. Trotzdem bin ich der Meinung: Ich habe mir die Konsole gekauft, ich darf damit anstellen, was ich will. Ob ich sie jetzt modden möchte, oder vom Balkon runterschmeißen, solle dabei mir selbst überlassen sein. Ich mein, es erlischt ja schon die Garantie der Konsole, wenn ich sie modde, das fände ich einen fairen Tausch, wenn ich sie dafür modden darf.

Zurück zu den Filmen:
Es gibt keine Seite auf der ich mir die .mp4 gegen Bezahlung herunterladen kann. Das ist einfach ein Fehler. Klar, es gibt Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, usw. die ihre Filme digital haben, aber die kann ich mir nicht runterladen. Auch wenn ich mir auf Amazon die .mp4 Version statt der physischen DVD kaufe, dann liegt die .mp4 immernoch bei Amazon, ich kann sie mir lediglich in Prime Video ansehen, aber nirgendwo herunterladen für meinen Server.

Aber warum ist das ein Fehler?
Zum Einen gehen diese Plastik DVDs stark auf die Umwelt, zum Anderen fördert das nur Raubkopien: Warum soll ich 50€ für eine DVD ausgeben, die ich einmal nutze, um mir den Aufwand des Digitalisierens anzutun und dann liegt die irgendwo rum, nimmt Platz weg und verstaubt (klar, ich kann sie weiterverkaufen, aber wer kauft denn heutzutage noch DVDs?^^), während ich mir nur einmal eine kostenlose Software installieren muss, mit welcher ich jeglichen Film von diversen illegalen Streamservices kostenlos herunterladen kann?

Zeitaufwand: Das Herunterladen und Installieren der Software lasse ich mal weg, weil das braucht es bei beiden Wegen, jedoch DVD rippen, wie es doch heißt, DVD aus der Hülle nehmen, in das CD Laufwerk einlegen, rippen starten, warten bis die Software fertig hat, DVD auswerfen, und weiter mit der Nächsten. Dabei muss man sich vielleicht noch irgendwie bücken, oder auf die Knie gehen, oder so, weil der PC an einer ungünstigen Stelle steht und dabei rote Knie bekommt, wie Darsteller aus gewissen Filmen^^ Während ich sonst nur Film auswählen kann, Download starten, während der Film heruntergeladen wird suche ich den nächsten und starte dessen Download, usw. Klar, der Download braucht dadurch länger, aber irgendwann sind die alle auf dem PC, ohne dass ich ständig alle 20 Minuten DVD wechseln muss, sprich ich kann in der Zwischenzeit, che ne sò, in der Früh die Downloads starten, untertags dann Zeit mit der Familie verbringen, Ausflüge machen usw., und am Abend wenn wir vor dem TV sitzen, direkt einen der Filme anschauen. Ist doch viel praktischer ;)

Aber ja... Gesetze sind halt... Zum Teil echt sinnlos und müssten stark überarbeitet werden... Aber ich freu mich schon Inuyashka schauen zu können :)

A warm hello to everyone,

as you may have noticed, I have a NAS running at home, which also serves as a media server. For the latter, I always find "new" old films and series on DVD that I would like to have on my media server because I used to love watching them ;)

Bored, I went on Amazon the other day and browsed a bit. Then I remembered an anime that I used to watch, albeit rarely, because I didn't know the channel's programme. I searched for a complete box set for it on Amazon and found the individual season box sets, plus a box set with all three associated films. Nice!

What wasn't nice about it was the price. About 50€ per box, sometimes a little more, rarely a little less... So, added up: 50€ x 7 seasons + film box = around 400€! Without shipping...

So, what to do?

• Do without the series? Not willingly.
• Buy one after the other every month? And then one is sold out before the next salary has arrived? Nope, not an option!
• Ask my father? Great! I'll take that option!

So I asked him and added the options that I would pay him back 50€ a month or that he would only pay part of it and I would pay the rest. But he took it all! So everything... The final amount was a little over 400€ plus shipping. So I paid this part with my own money. But I'm very grateful to him for taking most of it off my hands :)

Yesterday, 6 seasons plus the film box arrived (no idea why the 7th season was sent separately... Just Amazon things^^). My girlfriend watched it, I explained to her that my father had helped me with the financing and she was outraged... She couldn't believe how i was spending so much money on DVDs^^

Sure, it's a lot of money. Especially if you only use the DVD once to create a grey-toned "pirated copy", i.e. a digitisation of the DVD, because the titles are not legally available for download as .mp4 or whatever format.

I think that's a big mistake: plastic DVDs are being produced in piles when all that's needed is a digital version. And then there's the funny thing: there is media server software. But you need films and series in digital form for that. Which simply don't exist legally! Bypassing copy protection is illegal under copyright law. So how am I supposed to get my films and series digitally for my server? Sure, if you digitise your DVDs privately, nobody will find out, so you can do it, it's a grey area somewhere. If you start distributing the digital copies now, then that's a criminal offence! Understandable too, but why am I not allowed to digitise the DVD that I bought with my money and have physically at home? In other words, do what I want with it?

The same also applies to modding games consoles. I mean, I buy a Wii, I want more songs created by the fanbase for the game DJ Hero, but I can only get them on a modded console. So why am I not allowed to mod it? Because circumventing the security features is a criminal offence and the law is there to protect the game/console manufacturers. Which is also understandable somewhere, because modding the console makes it easy to get pirated copies of games on it. Somehow understandable. Nevertheless, I'm of the opinion: I bought the console, I can do what I want with it. Whether I want to mod it or throw it off the balcony should be up to me. I mean, the warranty on the console is already voided if I mod it, so I think it's a fair trade if I'm allowed to mod it in return.

Back to the films:
There is no site where I can download the .mp4 for a fee. That's simply a mistake. Sure, there are Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, etc. that have their films digitally, but I can't download them. Even if I buy the .mp4 version on Amazon instead of the physical DVD, the .mp4 is still on Amazon, I can only watch it in Prime Video, but I can't download it anywhere for my server.

But why is this a mistake?
On the one hand, these plastic DVDs are very harmful to the environment, and on the other, they only encourage piracy: Why should I spend 50€ on a DVD that I use once to go to the trouble of digitising and then it lies around somewhere, taking up space and gathering dust (sure, I can sell it on, but who buys DVDs these days?^^), while I only have to install free software once, with which I can download any film from various illegal streaming services for free?

Time required: I'll leave out downloading and installing the software, because that's required for both methods, but ripping the DVD, as it's called, taking it out of the case, inserting it into the CD drive, starting the ripping process, waiting until the software has finished, ejecting the DVD and moving on to the next one. You might have to bend down somehow, or get down on your knees, or something, because the PC is in an awkward position and gets red knees, like actors in certain films^^ Whereas otherwise I can just select a film, start the download, while the film is downloading I look for the next one and start its download, etc. Sure, the download takes longer, but at some point they're all on the PC without me having to keep changing DVDs every 20 minutes, so in the meantime, che ne sò, I can start the downloads in the morning, spend time with the family during the day, go on trips etc., and in the evening when we're sitting in front of the TV, we can watch one of the films straight away. It's much more practical ;)

But yes... Laws are just... Some of them are really pointless and need a major overhaul... But I'm already looking forward to watching Inuyashka :)
