It was a tiring Monday night as my phone rang, I turned a bit angrily trying to reach for my phone and wondering who would be calling by this time of the night.

I saw it was my mum and a thousand and one thoughts were rummaging through my mind as I wondered if all was well. I picked up the call and asked her if she’s fine and why she’s calling at this odd hour. She said all was fine and I let out a breath of fresh air.

She mentioned that she wasn’t feeling too well and she’s been complaining on and off about her health. So she said she needs to see a physiotherapist but she can’t go alone since she’s new to the city. She came for child visit to my elder brother’s place. My elder brother had requested I take her to the physiotherapist.

My week has all been planned out and I was going to have a tight and busy week. But what would a little sacrifice be a big deal for mum having known all the sacrifices she did for me as her child. I had to cancel out my appointment for the 5/11/24 to make out time to give mum the help she needed.

So I packed up a few things I would be needing early that day and headed to big brothers place to take mum to the clinic. I have been to a regular hospital but not a physiotherapy clinic hence I was a little excited as least I knew it wouldn’t have the regular smell of izal and medicines and I was correct.

We ordered a ride to the clinic and when we got there, I registered mum and then we had to wait for her turn to be attended to. There were other patients there. After the registration, she was given a kit which contained a pack of grinded and dried ginger for tea, a massage comb, bottle of spray balm and two pairs of leg warmer.

Mum have been complaining of serious joint, ankle and leg pains Infact all her body has been paining her and she’s been having issues walking straight and she’s been coughing endlessly for months. She needed a total body massage and was said to have contracted chronic cold.

Soon it was our turn to be attended to and I followed her to the room where the therapist asked for her symptoms and after she told her, she gave her some rules and guidelines to follow to avoid extra cold.

She was told to stop drinking cold water even room temperature but to be drinking warm water alone. She’s not to bath cold water or expose herself to cold through air conditioners and her fan should be on rotation and other plenty rules. Indeed good health is wealth.

She began her therapy by putting her under a hot sheet where she was connected to a heater for 40 minutes. I sat and watched as she was sweating under the heater and her sweat was dripping down the bed. After the frothy minutes, she dried her body and it was time for the massage therapy.

Mummy was screaming on top of her voice due to the pains she was feeling when she was being massaged. I felt so much pity for her. At a point she asked me to come and hold her hand so that she would be able to gain support and bear the pain. It was a solemn time of intimacy and bonding between mother and child as I kept telling her sorry and encouraging to bear the pains and let the massager do the work.

The therapist explained that her arteries and veins are clogged and blood is not flowing well and that’s the reason she feeling so much pain. At a point she couldn’t bear the pains again and we had to call it a day. The therapist explained that she would have to come everyday for the next two weeks for the therapy to start taking good effect.

The therapist went ahead to give us instructions on how to use the spray ointment, the powdered ginger and the leg warmers and we rested a little while and headed to the shop to join the other members of the family.

When we arrived, mum was exited and all about gisting everyone how her therapy went and how she was shouting when she was being massaged. We all laughed along with her but when it was happening, it wasn’t a laughing matter. We had a little snack to snack on at the fashion house while we waited till evening before heading home.

When I got back, I was tired and had something to eat and then retired for the night to rest and head back to my place the next day.

Mum would be going back for her therapy the next day but she would be going alone since she has gotten to know her way around after our first visit. I was glad I could make that little sacrifice for her and be at her side when she needed it. It was a good day and I also learnt a lot from the therapist teachings.
