A lot can be learnt through reading cos readers are leaders. Reading affects the mind and the entirety of the soul and propels us towards achieving great things which we see as a green light synonymous to success.

Show me someone who reads wide and wild and I would show you a leader in the making. I would show you somehow who’s gonna stand out among the equals by virtue of the great wisdom amassed through reading. It all depends on what you read though and that’s where The Green Spotlight comes in.

This week I bring you an amazing all time book and you are gonna love it. It’s non other but “Gifted hands”. Ring a bell?

My opinion about the book “ Gifted hands”

Introduction/Theme

Gifted hands is a beautiful book about the story of the famous Ben Carson. Am sure the name rings a bell. It would if you are an ardent reader of motivational books.

This beautiful master piece all brought together what we would say is an author biography of an exceptional young man who rose from an ordinary prejudiced, timid and shy boy to an global and sought after neurosurgeon of all times with the help of his mother.

The book is an empathic one as it would reach out deeply into your soul and tug at that giant on your inside and would inspire you to do all that you have been yearning to do. Hmmm, lemme slow down as I try to bring out some salient points that would catch your fancy from this book.

Let’s look at few points to glean from this beautiful book.

The essence of these keys points is to whet your appetite to want to actually get this book and read it for yourself cos it would never do real justice to the volume of wisdom it had to offer you. Let’s proceed all the same.

• Ben grew up in the city of Detroit from a poor home with his elder brother Curtis and his Mum abandoned by their father when he was nine years old and he would never have imagined the future that lay ahead of him considering his terrible childhood experiences.

His mum a resilient and determined woman played a key role in molding him into what he became but not outside his determination to be the best.

• Sonya Curtis, Ben’s mum married at an early age of about 13 years in a bid to escape poverty having been born in a family where she had 23. Siblings. After her failed marriage, she juggles three jobs and had to brings her boys under strict rules such as reading two books every week and reporting their progress to her.

The boys didn’t like her discipline so much but they had to obey their mum as she instilled discipline of reading into their lives and letting them know that they can be anything they want.

• Ben was a victim of peer pressure, growing up and wanted to be like the other boys which affected his grades but Sonya didn’t give up on her boys as she keeps telling them that reading and studying hard would help them achieve their goals and have better lives.

She instilled Christian faith and believe in Ben which was a guiding principle throughout his Life as he would always pray and depend on God when he encountered challenges.

• Ben’s believe in himself began to grow as he puts in his best in his studies and he had the best grades in his junior high and college despite ridicule and racial prejudice from his fellow students and even teachers.

Due to his high grades, he got a full scholarship into the prestigious Yale university where he studied to be a medical doctor. He also met Candy who later became his wife.

• Ben became the most sort after student during his medical school as he would help other students and even staff do their work. Ben had interest in psychiatry medicine and he wanted to become a missionary doctor but he later developed interest in neurology.

He had a news of a problem at the neurological department at the famous John Hopkins hospital and applied. His work in the hospital would unravel a chapter of his life that he never envisaged.

Do you care to know how he rose to lime light to become the chief pediatrician neurosurgeon surgeon leading a team of doctors to perform difficult surgeries including the separation of conjoined twins who were joined together on their head? Read the book.

His stellar achievements in his career had been a source of inspiration to both young and old alike.

My rating of the book

Gifted hands is a roller coaster of emotions. It would make you sigh, cry and smile and then it would touch the innermost part of you and would give you that push that would make you stand in front of the mirror and tell you’re that if Ben can, then you can.

Ben discovered himself and what he was born for and went for it. It doesn’t mean that all of us would have to follow similar paths. The idea is in discovering your purpose and pouring yourself into it and making the most of your destiny.

We all have gifted hands if only we would discover the right place to put them in.
