A day like a thousand years literally is a prolongation of a sad event which occur in a day, but the gravity of the event looked like a person has been in the situation a thousand years, a bad event that occurred and you wished for the morning to come (new day).

A DAY LIKE A THOUSAND YEARS

9th October 2009 was a day I will never forget. On that day, we woke up, and we had our morning devotion. After that, my two younger siblings were getting ready to go to school while I prepared to go for my computer lessons by 9:00am. My dad had an appointment with one of his clients in Uyo by 8:00am, so everyone had to do what was supposed to be done, bath, eat and get ready to go out. My mom was also preparing to go to her office. By 6:40am my younger siblings had gone to school, so by 7:00am my dad had left for his appointment.

In the afternoon of that day, I got back earlier than my siblings been that we finished our classes by 11;30 on Fridays, so I had to cook jellof rice to be eaten when they returned from school. The day was going on smoothly, with a warm temperature and a cool breeze. There was electricity supply, so I had to use that opportunity to do my assignment in PowerPoint in which I was to create a slide with a good write-up, so I could make a presentation with it.

I was able to do my assignment because we had a desktop computer at home, so it was easier for me to do my assignment. At around 1:00pm my mom came back. It was quite too early for her to come back home by that time, so I asked my mom why the early return. She told me she had a sudden headache and needed to come back home and rest, then I served her the jellof rice. She ate and had a rest.

My dad came back by 6:00pm. My younger siblings and I welcomed my dad, kept water for him to bathe and later the jellof rice was served to my dad, but my dad said he wanted to eat spaghetti spice with sardines. It was around 6:50pm, so I got the money and went to a superstore that wasn't far away from our house to buy the items to be cooked. I got home by 7.00pm and met mom and dad watching this popular TV series Pa Ajasco and company. I greeted them, and then I noticed that my younger siblings were not in the parlor, neither did I hear their voices. Mom told me she sent them to the pharmacy to buy drugs for her. I left the parlor for the kitchen to prepare the food.

In the house, we had two kitchens, one inside the house and the other outside, then I decided to use the one outside where we cooked with firewood. I chose the kitchen outside so I could boil the hot water fast for my mom because she complained about the cold. After the water had boiled, I took it down from the fire stand, I started cutting the spaghetti into the pot and was about putting it on fire. Two body-built men walked down to the kitchen. I was shocked. Then I wondered what they wanted to ask me that will warrant them to walk down to the kitchen, I was curious. I greeted them, but they didn't respond to my greetings. One of them came so close to me and carry up his shirt, lo and behold he had a gun with him, then my heart cut, at that moment I knew there was a problem.

So many thoughts run through my mind; Atim shout so that someone can hear your voice and help you and another said don't shout, what if you shout and they shot you and runaway, be brave don't say a word. The armrobbers paraded me inside our house, one at the front and the other behind me, they armrobbers were asking me questions if my dad was around I answered yes, they wanted to be sure. When dad heard the voices he asked from the parlour where he was seated "Nwa who are you talking with" I told my dad nobody because I knew If I had try to say a word my life will be gone or they might end up killing everyone, so I had to comport myself, by the time he asked the second time the armed men were already in the parlour.

The armed men ordered us to lie down flat on the floor, I lied right under the dinning table, they told us not to shout. One was at the door, while the other walked in and packed all the phones, then my mom started shouting and they told my mom if you dare shout we will shot you, but my mom was scared she kept on shouting.

Then in the mist of this I beg my mom please don't shout again and miraculously my mom kept quite. Deep down in my heart I had made confession and said my last prayer, I was crying profusely.

Though the armed men ordered us to lie down I noticed my father was still seated on the sofa, he asked the armed men who packed the phone if he is done he can take a leave and he responded to my dad that their mission is to kill. The one at the door say to the one who stood at the dinning to shot my dad, and right there on the floor I was praying to God for a miracle to happen, I thought of who will sponsor my education if they shut him, what will happen to our life if he dies. Suddenly my dad stood up speedily from where he sat and held unto one of the armed men, he struggled with the armed man, at that point he could not shot easily because they were so close to each other. Then I saw in my dad's eye that he was fighting to save his life since they had told him they came to kill him.

He struggled the gun with all his strength, one of them who stood at the door said to the other shoot na, why are you wasting time and I heard the guy say I can't shot, this man is too strong, at that moment the one standing at the door brought out his own gun but he couldn't shot because he could mistakenly shot his accomplice, the struggle continue until there was a loud sound of a gun shot, I shouted Jesus by this time the was no strength in me to cry again,I was weak.

For the next second my dad did not move neither the armed guy, when my dad realized he was still alive and the bullet did not pierced through his body, he struggled again with the armed man, at this point the armed men had to run for their life because the unusual happened, my dad seeing that they wanted to escape aim for the cutlass behind the door and hit one of them on the shoulder.

They armed men ran away leaving their automatic gun. At that moment I saw the wonderful work of God, it wasn't by might nor by power that my dad was still alive, it was God who gave us most especially my dad a great chance to live again. A call was put across to the police station, within 5 minutes the police men arrived at our house. They were shocked to see the gun the assassin's left and ran away.

The policeman in charge of the police troop asked my dad, are you a military man? Are you a retired military man and my dad responded "" I am a soldier of Christ". After the police had gone, people adviced my dad we should leave the house to somewhere, my dad said we will stay in the house and we will be fine.

I was shaking and could not alter any word. The night became so long that I had to pray for a new day to come, the night became longer than usual. Though the incident happened in hours it was like a thousand years which I prayed to God to see a brand new day. I was happy I did not loose my parents and I was also grateful to God for sparing my life on that fateful day.

MODs Comment/Recommendation:
Wow, your story is so touching. I've had similar cases where I had to pray for dawn but it seemed unending. Your dad was very lucky because such moves would have caused the lives of all of you. On a second thought, what if the other armed robber threatened to kill you and your mom if your dad doesn't leave his colleague? Hmmmmm. God just intervene. It's his confidence for me because that was just too risky. Thanks for sharing.
