INTRODUCTION

Welcome to another week of our roundtable discussion about our culture. It could be agreed that some of our culture are gradually going into extinction due to the rapidly growing civilization taking the center stage. While we appreciate the good side of civilization, we should as well, strongly uphold our cultural norms or values. The reason among others, to uphold our cultural values is that our culture is the basis of our origin. And when we fail to uphold our culture, it then means that we ignore or deny our origin. This background forms our discussion this week.

I now formally welcome and recognize all ethnic nationalities as follows:

  • The Igbos
  • The Ibibios
  • The Efiks
  • The Yorubas
    The Hausas
  • The Ijaws
  • The fulanis
  • The Tivis
  • The kanuris

I don't forget other ethnic nationalities that I could not mention but are existing in this community. My greetings to all of you.

The importance of cultural values highlights the need for its knowledge to be captured early. Infact, cultural values should be thaught in the basic, secondary and tertiary institutions. The importance of cultural values include the following:

  • It promotes peaceful coexistence in the community

  • Serves as a bond that holds the community together

  • It enhances the economic engagement in the community

  • It reveals the identity and origin of a people.

  • It promotes social wellness and betterment.

CONCLUSION

We can never undermine the benefits of upholding our cultural values. It defines us as a people and give a sense of brotherhood among the people.

When the knowledge of cultural values are being thaught from the lower to the higher levels of education institutions, it goes a long way in preserving and transfering our cultural values to the next generation.
