Bodily cleanliness, care in the preparation and preservation of food, suitable housing with adequate ventilation and provision for the disposal of waste, are all essential for healthy living.
By taking care of your body, you can reduce the chances of becoming diseased.
Therefore, I can say that Hygiene is defined as a methods that must be adopted to preserve and promote health. They includes cleanliness, exercise, balanced diet and rest. In essence, many disease can be controlled and prevented by hygienic measures.
Nowadays, humans are tend to forgot or ignore some of the fact about health care. And this health care is very important to our living. Therefore, try to avoid what you know is wrong and do the right ones, as this will be or contribute to a good well-being. Below are some listed things about your body which are very vital and need to pay attention to;
The hands should be thoroughly washed with soap after visiting the latrine.
Fingernails harbour dirt and scratching an infected part of the skin will spread the infection. In that note, fingernails should always be kept short and clean, and hands should always be washed regularly with soap and water expecially before and after meal.
The Feet
Feet should be thoroughly washed because sweating of the skin in between the toes provides ideal condition for the growth of fungal spores which cause athlete's foot or foot rot.
Avoid walking barefooted because several disease like hookworm enter the body through the feet, wearing shoes help to avoid infection.
There are fine hairs in the nostrils which filter dirt and germs from the inhaled air. So the nose should be blown, using a clean handkerchief to remove the germs and dust which may accumulate especially when the weather is windy and dusty. Also note that sharing handkerchief spreads disease.
The mouth and teeth needs special care, otherwise food particles trapped in between the teeth may cause decay. Remember tooth decay when the sugar intake in the diet increases and when the bacteria that lives in the mouth feeds on food trapped between the teeth. So cleaning of teeth should be done each morning and rinsing of mouth should be done immediately after each meal.
The eyes should be kept clean by washing with clean water and soap. This is important as dust and flies carry microbes of various eye disease such as trachoma.
The ear is a very delicate organ and every effort should be made to keep it clean. The tympanic membrane (eardrum) can be raptured by loud noises as well as the direct injury. A raptured eardrum allows micro-organisms to enter the ear. Also, very sharply pointed instrument should always be avoided when cleaning wax out of the ear.
Clothes should be clean, tidy and loose- fitting to avoid restriction of blood circulation. If clothes are saturated with sweat, they may irritate the skin. They should be changed frequently and thoroughly washed with clean water.
Bathing should be done at least twice a day with soap, sponge and water, as parasites like lice, fleas and mites are common on dirty skin. Not only do their bites cause irritation and probably infection but they are often vectors of disease. Also any wound, cut, abrasion should be kept clean as many pathogens may gain entry through punctures of the skin.
It is important that the scalp and hair should be kept clean by washing with soap and warm water at regular intervals. Too frequent washing is undesirable, for it removes the natural lubricating oil from the hair.
A dirty scalp provide a breeding ground for parasites as a lice. This parasites can be transmitted from one person to another when comb and brushes are shared, when hair wig is shared, when sitted close to a lice person in transit etc.
Exercise plays important role in healthy living. It brings many parts of the body into action. Regular exercise, particularly for people who live in towns and cities is of benefit to the body.
The benefits of regular exercise include increased efficiency of the lungs, heart and kidney, improve muscle condition and posture and better appetite.
Everyone needs adequate rest. During sleep the body's muscles relax and energy can be used in the production of cells for repair of the body. As there is more growth hormone circulating in the blood when a person is asleep, cell grow more quickly.
Conclusion
Personal Hygiene is one of the things we should not ignore because it involves keeping all parts of the external body clean and healthy. It is also important for maintaining both physical and mental health.
