What is a New Year Resolution?

A New Year Resolution is a commitment that people make to themselves at the beginning of each year. The reason why people make new year resolutions to improve their lives, habits, and relationships. The idea is to make an intentional effort to change or improve something in your life and start the new year on a positive note.

Is it a Futile Yearly Routine or a Viable Means of Achieving Yearly Goals?

I believe it's the combination of both. For some persons, making New Year resolutions is a pointless yearly routine. They make promises to themselves, but fail to follow through. They might start strong, but soon lose the zeal and return to their old habits. This can be discouraging and lead to feelings of guilt and frustration.

However, for others, making New Year Resolutions can be a means of achieving their goals. It's an opportunity to reflect on what they want to achieve and make a plan to get there. By setting distinct, measurable, and achievable goals, people can make progress and celebrate their successes. It's all about approach and mindset.

What's the Missing Link that Makes People Fail with their New Year Resolutions?

In my opinion, it's a combination of different factors.

  • People often set unrealistic goals that are too ambitious. They might say "I want to lose weight" or "I want to be more productive", but they don't break it down into smaller, workable steps.

  • People often lack a clear plan or strategy for achieving their goals. They might start strong, but soon lose zeal and don't know how to get back on track.

  • People often underrate the power of habits and environment. They might try to change their behavior, but they don't change their surroundings or habits that support their old behavior.

  • People often give up too easily. They might encounter setbacks, but they don't learn from their mistakes and adapt. They simply give up and wait for next year to make new resolutions.

Overall, making New Year Resolutions can be a powerful way to achieve your goals, but it requires a thoughtful approach, a clear plan, and a willingness to adapt and learn.
