It was the last day of the year (31st December 2023). The time was 11:59 pm and we were all in anticipation to see the clock tick 12:00 am. And when it was officially 12:00 a.m, the whole place was filled with shouts of jubilation, the sky was filled with fireworks, celebrating the arrival of the new year, hugging and shaking our friends, families and loved ones, saying "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!".
My joy knew no bounds for being alive to see 2024 despite the various encounters in the previous year. Being alive is a blessing and it can only be GOD.
It's the 29th week of the Steem4Nigeria Accelerator Contest with the topic "Happy New Year!". And here is my participation.
My favourite new year tradition or customs is staying close to the fire place at nights to keep the body warm, alongside having some very nice roasted meat (suya). This, I do mostly when I go to the village to celebrate new year with my relatives and grandparents. We also go to the village square when it's exactly 7pm for dance. People from nearby villages, come together to share happiness by dancing to the beats of talking drums, whistle and gongs.
While here in Abuja, we also come together with music playing and food being served amongst ourselves. We most celebrate it with goat meat pepper soup and child soft drinks. This is been done every year with friends, families and neighbours...
Yes! Yes!! I have some special resolution for this year and they include major things like;
- Get more intimate with my creator (GOD)
- Learn new digital skills.
- Get more organized.
- Spend less money and save more money (invest more)
- Enhance healthy lifestyle such as diets and physical activities.
- Make new friends.
- Become recognized on Steemit.
Celebrating the New Year's Eve is more like a tradition in the Nigeria for most people. Most times, on the the Eve of new year, (during the day), it's all about refreshments and more... But during the next, that's when I go to church for the "Crossover Service". This simply means a church mass/service that is done every 31st December from 8:00pm - 12:00am or so, to mark the entry into a new year.
At the church, when the clock ticks 12:00 am, there is jubilation all around for successfully entering into the new year. People hug themselves and Calls are being made to friends, families and loved ones, who are away, wishing them a having new year and best wishes ahead. When the church service is finished, then we go home and watch the display of fireworks in the air, sounds of bangers and the illumination from burning tyres.
The concept of "New Year, New Me" can be be very appealing and it's quite understandable why so many people embrace this concept. After all, starting a new year may seem like having a chance to start over again and improve on the past. But do we need to wait every new year before we can make positive changes in our lives? The answer is No, and so I find the concept of "New Year, New Me" overrated.
It is important to remember that we don't need to wait for every 365 or 366 days to be gone before we can be better version of ourselves and make decisions. Everyday is an opportunity to learn, grow and become what we've always wanted.
To myself, I wish to find balance and joy in my life, to be surrounded with people who love and support me. I also wish to have the courage and determination to take risks and steps that would be of benefit to my life.... In this coming year, the spirit of gratitude, positivity and resilience is what I wish both for myself and others. Gratitude is a very important quality, positivity can help us to stay motivated and focused on our goals and resilience is the master key for bouncing back from challenges, difficult times and for coming out stronger than before.
In conclusion, the new Year is already here. What we weren't able to achieve in the previous year can be achieved this year with focus, resilience and determination. Always remember that you don't have to wait for a trip around the sun before you can make positive changes.
"Everyday is an opportunity to learn and grow"
Once again HAPPY NEW YEAR. I wish you all the best...
