Introduction

Hi friends, I welcome you once again to my blog. Last week we looked at the first British occupation of Nigeria.

For this week's edition, I want to capture today, 15th January in the history of Nigeria.

Did you know that the first military overthrow of government in Nigeria took place on 15th January 1966? Oh yes, it is.

Today marks 59 years since the event took place in Nigeria.

What have you heard about coups in Africa? Did you know that before the military topple of government in Nigeria in 1966, that Egypt was the first country in which a coup took place in Africa in 1952?

Bringing to us the history of military coups in Nigeria, the 15th January 1966 coup led to the killing of prominent Nigerian elites and nationalists.

The coup was staged by Major Kaduna Nzeogwu and five other military officers. It brought in a military government that was ruled by Gen. Aguiyi Thomas Ironsi.

Did you know that Nigeria has had a total of 5 military coups within a period of 1996 before democracy in 1999? It was 33 years of military rule in Nigeria.

Did You Know the Former Military Heads of States in Nigeria and the Duration of their Rule?
  • Aguiyi Thomas Ironsi: January 15th 1966-July 1966

  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon 1966-1975

  • Gen. Murtala Muhammed 1975-1976

  • Gen. Obasanjo 1976-1979 (no coup)

  • Gen. Muhammadu Buhari 1983-1985

  • Gen. Ibrahim Babangida 1985-1993

  • Gen. Sani Abacha 1993-1998 (no coup)

  • Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar 1998 - 1999 (no coup)

Stay tuned as I'll one day give the details of each of the coups as we progress in our "Did You ou Know" history.
