Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 51: A Day Like A Thousand Years.

Introduction

A day is like a thousand years connotes a long awaiting moment in a life of someone or in the life of a people. The metaphoric sentence to me is a period of the long journey that seemed everlasting like the children of Israel journeyed in the wilderness and boom! One day, the saw themselves arriving the promised land. It could also be a dream come true for someone or a people in an unexpected way. Enjoy this epic story as I have scripted below.

A Day Like A Thousand Years.

In a little village of Ndon, men and women were just so busy. Men tried to arrange the place while the women were cooking. Young maidens and young men in the village were on their toes. While the maidens were fetching water, the young men were pounding usung bia (pounded yam). The children weren't left out, they were singing, clapping and dancing while some were drumming.

Wow! It was a great day, the weather was fair enough, very mild, no rain and the sun was at the minimum. That's what the school children usually sing in their marching song, "the day is bright and fair."

Within some hours, visitors were trooping to the very large ground flamboyantly decorated both in a modern and native way. The native decoration was made for the natives, especially the chiefs, and the other side of the modern decoration was for the visitors and perhaps the young men and women in the village.

It was the day they had been waiting all years. For many years, it was as if this wouldn't be a reality. They have heard of stories about such happenings in some villages in their clan, but it was never seen or experienced in their village. That is why the whole village stood agog to celebrate such a day in their history.

One would imagine what day that was? What could that be? Oh yes, it was a day they had never had. For the same reason, the king sent his second son. He never succeeded. The assistant village king sent his only son. He, too, couldn't succeed either. So on one lovely morning, due to the fact that the people needed to experience the joy they had been witnessing around the neighbouring villages, the chief gave orders that the town crier should send information across the entire village that whoever would be able to go forth to achieve success in the area they were expecting, that the village council was going to sponsor him. And after that, he would be celebrated by the entire village.

So, Andikan, the son of one of the poor village farmers, volunteered to take the mantle and make his people proud. All was set, and he was given all the necessary support and, finally, he achieved it after some years.

Ever wondered what that was? The village wanted someone who would be conscious of going to the Catholic seminary to become a priest. Shocking? No, you shouldn't be. Being a Catholic priest brought pride to the villagers and not just the parents of the priest. It was a prestigious thing.

The fateful day was a day set aside by the villagers to celebrate their priest. It was just like a dream, they never thought it was going to be possible. Their thought was that a day such as that would be in eternity. Alas, the day was just before them, "a day like a thousand years" became their reality.
