"The Devil you know is better than the Angel you don't know"
That statement makes a lot of meaning, that next person you want to approach abandoning an already good friend of yours as a result of a small mistake, how well do you know that person? How sure are you that the person isn't worse than that friend of yours?
Joana was a victim of this and she relates her story:
"When I remember how close I was to being deserted, I thank God for not allowing me to fall into a very difficult situation, one I escaped from before it was too late.
I and Laura were the best of friends, surely we had been friends right from Elementary school down till high school, we had never separated from each other and we loved each other dearly.
We both got admission into the university to study Micro biology because we both loved nature and the environment since we were kids, we hoped to complete our university education together and get a job together.
I felt like nothing could hinder our relationship with each other since we seemed practically inseparable.
The whole scenario started in the second semester of our first year in school.
A new girl named Stephanie joined our school, it didn't take her a week to be popular. She was the daughter of a very successful business tycoon in town, a fashionista and with her cars and accessories one would want to always be Around her.
True, as friends we didn't have any need for an extra hand, after all that's not why we went to school, although I secretly admired her dressing, and the way she threw money around like it was paper.
After our first year in school, I and Laura graduated with the highest score and we were so overjoyed and more determined to work hard.
On a Tuesday afternoon, going home after school, I saw a fancy Mercedes pull up beside me, and Surprisingly, I saw Stephanie stepping out of the car coming towards me, I wondered seriously why she should be coming towards me, and if she was really coming towards me.
She walked up to me and said:
"You must be Joana right?"She asked
I nodded, I was flabbergasted, I didn't believe that the popular girl in school was actually talking to me.
"Good, you must already know me, don't stress yourself much, get into the car, you're gonna be my friend " She suddenly said and started guiding me to the car, she opened the front seat and I got In and sat down, immediately feeling the Air conditioner of the car, a contrast to the sun I was experiencing.
She took me shopping, she got clothes, shoes, bags etc for me, I was just surprised, I would always shiver whenever I heard the prices of all those stuffs she got for me and she didn't even seem to care.
Soon she dropped me at home and left and I immediately went to call Laura and told her about the entire incident.
"I don't know Joan, I don't like that girl one bit" I heard Laura saying over the phone
"How girl? I told she she just filled my house with stuffs, and your saying, is it that your jealous or something?"
"Not like that! Yunno she approached me for the same friendship but I turned her down, saying that I already have a close friend, I just don't like her" Laura said but we had a little argument before we ended the call.
I was very mad at her for doing that, the next day in school I got to the library, all of a sudden I saw message on my phone.
'Uhm Joana, I don't want to ever have anything to do with you anymore, I've found someone better than you, I regret meeting you!'
I was dumbstruck when I saw it, I was about to go meet her when Stephanie and her group of friends entered into the library, she came and sat beside me and she noticed my expression.
"Everything ok Joan?" She asked
"Well my friend just said something that hurt me" I replied her
"That's why I'm here for you dear, leave fake friends alone" Stephanie replied to me.
Just then Laura stepped inside the library when I and Stephanie were about leaving, she tried to approach me, but was blocked by Stephanie's friends, Laura gave me a look asking me to come out.
Then everything Stephanie said and all that happened came back to me, I simply turned my gaze away and told Stephanie that we should go.
That was how we stopped being friends, and I became friends with Stephanie helping in her studies, during our final year, I was stranded, I was attacked by robbers on my way home from school and they took everything except my phone from me. I immediately called Stephanie and told her my plight.
"I'm sorry girl I can't come, I'm somewhere urgent now" Stephanie said.
I continued thinking until I heard voices, it was coming from the phone, turns out I didn't end the call.
"What's even up with that girl, can't she see I'm just using her for studies, what would I be doing with a lowlife, oh please, Guys! Let's go for the party shall we?"
I heard Stephanie saying this over the phone, I sank into an old chair and started crying, the only person left to call was Laura and that was whom I called.
After hearing what happened, she cut the call and came to my rescue, she took me to her home and I sincerely apologized to her.
I told her about the text message that was sent to me.
"That's what I came to tell you about, I noticed that someone hacked my phone and you shouldn't mind whatever message you see, but you didn't listen" Laura explained
It dawned on me then that Stephanie planned it all, I was truly hurt, there I and Laura reconciled and she truly forgave me.
Stephanie kept on trying to approach me and I turned her down, I and Laura finished and graduated with a first class upper.
Anytime I remember the way I almost got stranded due to my own bad decisions, I'm convinced that the truly:
*"The devil you know is better than the Angel you don't know"..
Hope that story truly illustrated that Idiom. Thanks for reading.
