How Do You Care For Your Closure Wig?

First of all, what is a closure and why should you pamper it?

A closure is a hair that is place on top of a lace and attach to your hair or wig.
Closures are use to achieve a more natural look when you are wearing a wig. No matter the attachment method, the result will be the same and very desirable.

This wig was given to me by a customer, and after working on it, I had to advise her on how to take proper care of her closure wig. I also advice her not to add so much pressure on her closure while brushing the wig reasons being that, adding pressure on a lace closure while brushing a wig can cause several damages to the closure like:

  • Cause Damage to the Lace: Too much pressure can tear or weaken the lace fabric.

  • Hair Shedding: Pressing too hard while brushing can cause the hairs attached to the lace closure to loosen or fall out, leading to shedding in the closure.

  • Uneven Wear: Applying too much pressure can cause the hair to become varying in quality, making the closure look unnatural and not smooth.

  • Increased Tension: Excessive pressure will cause tension on the closure, particularly affecting how the closure look and the overall appearance of the hair.

So to avoid all these issues, here's a proper step by step guide to help you brush your wig correctly:

Proper Ways To Brush Your Wig

NOTE: Brushing your wig properly is the key to maintaining its appearance and longevity.

  • A Clean Wig: Ensure your wig is clean and dry before brushing. Brushing a dirty or damp wig can cause tangling and breakage.

  • Detangle Gently: Use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush designed for wigs (human or synthetic hair). Start from the tips and work your way up to the roots. This will help reduce breakage and prevent tangles from getting worse.

  • Hold the Wig Steady: Secure the wig on your head or mannequin to keep it stable while brushing. This will make it easier to detangle and style without causing damage.

  • Brush in Sections: Divide the wig into sections. Brush each section properly to ensure thorough detangling and to avoid overwhelming the hair with too much pressure at once.

  • Be Gentle: Use light, smooth strokes when brushing. Avoid pulling or yanking the hair, because this can cause breakage or damage to the wig and its lace.

  • Avoid Brushing Too Often: Excessive brushing can lead to tearing. Brush only when you notice tangles or before styling.

  • Use a Proper Products: For human hair wigs, use a leave-in conditioner to help with detangling. For synthetic wigs, use products specifically designed for synthetic fibers to avoid damage.
Proper Ways Of Hanging or Storing Your Wig

Hanging a wig on a nail is not the best or recommended method for storing a wig, so here’s a proper way to hang your wig and ensure it doesn’t get damaged:

  • Use a Wig Hanger or Bag: Before hanging your wig, put it in a wig bag or hang in a wig hanger if possible. The wig bag will help maintain the texture of the wig and reduce tangling.

  • Secure the Wig: If you must use a nail, always avoid the closure area while hanging the wig, rather you can use the adjustment band or hang on the wig cap.

  • Avoid Excessive Pulling: Make sure you don't drag the wig when pulling or unhanging because this can cause damage to the wig or the lace.

  • Consider Using a Wig Stand: For best care, using a wig stand or a mannequin head is recommended. These options help reduce the risk of tangle or damage.

  • Store in a Dry Place: Hang the wig in a cool, dry place, keep away from direct sunlight which can affect the quality of the wig.

*Using a wig stand, mannequin head or wig bag is generally a better practice for storing wigs because it provides better support and helps preserve the wig’s shape and overall condition.
