Greetings and welcome
The economic hardship in Nigeria has worsened and has made many Nigerian suffer as the country inflation rate still increases by the day. There's no respite in sight for the common man in the country, a friend of mine and her acquittance told me that she bought petrol at the price of N845 which is almost a N1000 if I am very correct, this means that to transport yourself from point A to point B is becoming even more expensive and there is the talk about the value of the naira. I just checked the business update and the dollar is currently at N1487 naira at the CBN rate while the black market rate is N1494 naira to a dollar.
Why am I talking about all this , why am I making references to all of these data? It is because as of about last month, labour NLCUT walks out on the minimum wage committee meeting, a meeting consisting of labour, the federal government and the private sector and labour walked out because there was a proposal made to labour that the minimum wage that the government can afford is 48 thousands naira and labour said no that's not good enough, that's not something we would accept which has also led labour to go on strike. There's also the talk about 56 thousands naira for the private sector, so I want to talk about these two proposal and then put it side by side with the current economic reality, I just told you about the value of the naira which we all know that there is some decline in value as to what the naira is against the dollar.
The food Inflation which is the price of food items has gone up from 40.01% to 40.53%. this is just a point at to the fact that things are very expensive. My point Is people are finding it difficult to afford transportation with the current price of petrol, people are finding it difficult to pay house rents, school fees and all of these bills and responsibilities that people carry. Now is 48 thousands naira enough, what can 48 thousands naira buy in this current economy, most items in the market are being transported to the market and with the current petrol price there will surely be an increase in those food items.
As of about last week Friday I went to the market and I bought a rubber of garri for #3800 and when I went to buy it again this week it has increased to #4300, a rubber of rice is now #6600, a rubber of beans is about #5500 and even going to #6000 and when you deduct all these expenses and bills to pay from the 48 thousands naira that the federal government is proposing what will remain, what else can the individual use to settle and survive. These and more are what labour is considering concerning the proposal made by the federal government about the minimum wage, the current situation in nigeria has become worrisome and most people can't afford the hardship anymore. I keep on asking myself this question when will the hardship in this country reduce, is the federal government not seeing what is happening to the common Nigerian all these and more are some of the questions I ask myself each day.
The rate at which the people are suffering is becoming alarming, I was on my way to the church when a little boy about six years old walked up to me begging me for money to eat that he hasn't eaten since morning out of pity and knowing that to eat in this country is becoming very difficult, I brought out five hundred naira and gave the little boy to buy something to eat, he kept on thanking me and he was also happy. This is to show how the economic situation in Nigeria has made many people hungry and poor. If only the federal government would come to the aid of Nigerians and reduce the price of petrol, encourage agriculture, encourage importation and exportation of locally made goods and many more the inflation of goods and products would have been stopped by now. I sincerely pray that God will help many Nigerians to survive this hardship and that our country would be better one day.
I would love to invite @saintkelvin17 @mesola @ruthjoe and @goodybest to join me in this contest.
