Behala Art Festival is very unique in nature because of its name after a neighbourhood of Kolkata though it is a very extraordinary event of the city for its ordinary people. There are several art galleries organising various exhibitions and art fairs throughout the year which are visited by artists and critics. Normally no ordinary common people ever visited those shows. Graphite art installation photography spray painting video installation visual art forms are displayed here in houses, the rickshaw stand, street, garage and parking lots.

“The idea is to make art as much accessible to a vegetable vendor as to a vegetable buyer, as much accessible to a rickshaw puller as to a commuter. We wanted to free art from the confines of galleries, we wanted to rid it of the elitist tag, we wanted to bridge the gap between art and ordinary people,” Abhishek Bhattacharjee, one of the organisers.

This is the fifth edition of the festival.

It also attracts missing arts and crafts of neighbouring districts.

The festival started yesterday and will continue for three days. There are about 25 artists who have contributed their art work. The cctv camera and twenty four hours of security vigilance will protect their art.

Apart from Durga Puja this is the only art festival that happens in public forums.

Though the festival is held in the month of February but it has been prepone due to election in the next year.

“Artists are encouraged to engage in any artistic discipline, including installation, photography, performance, and graffiti, among others. This year, artists from several countries, including Japan, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Denmark, are participating,” Panchali Banerjee, director of Behala Art Fest Foundation.

People of the locality also take part and provide all short of help which has really given relief to the organizer.

Thank you for reading my post.

My deepest sympathies on the loss of promising children in the regrettable incident that occurred at the Islamic High School in Ibadan.
