Hi famz welcome back to this space, am super excited to have you back here once again. I was just taking stock of what I've done so far and then discovered I've taught this course, Graphic Design for beginners for 3 straight month without a break...and I've successfully covered my syllabus.
How time flies, just like yesterday, we started out and today I could look back and smile because of the value dished out over the month. Those who have been following openly and secretly can attest to what I've just said...
Trust me it has not been easy putting up those lectures including the the theoretical and practical lessons, if you doubt me come and try it😀... Anyways that's just on a lighter note. You guys made the journey to the end of the beginners class worth it.
The next line of action is to move to Graphic design 102 which would of course be a bit advanced when compared to the one we just did. If you've not digested the ones we did in G101, do well to go through it and digest it as it will be a very useful tool for the next phase.
While I work on the syllabus for 102, we would be doing series of designs to keep us busy and prepared for the next phase. I believe the next phase is going to be awesome and loaded as well.
I think it's expedient at this point to appreciate everyone that followed the lecture and supported it all through this phase and most especially the steemit team for the support, am very grateful.
So I would do a summary below of what we did from lesson one to the end.
- Lesson 1.
In this lesson we did an introduction to the subject matter. I took time to explain what we are about to venture into and shared with us terminologies that would be helpful for this course. The full gist is captured in the lesson, you will get it by accessing the link I would be sharing later in this post.
- Lesson 2
In lesson two we looks at the principles of Graphic design. In the lesson I mentioned the need for principles and the reason why it should be followed. Graphic design has it principles and I took time to mention and explain them coupled with some relevant terminologies The principles include;
- Contrast
- Balance
- Emphasis
- Scale/Proportion
- Repetition
- Movement/Rhythm.
- Unity/Harmony.
- Hierarchy.
- Lesson 3
In this lesson we looked at the topic Typography which I defined as a skillful art of arranging typeface in such a way that the message, communicated via text in a design can be legible, readable, well presented and appealing to viewers.
We talked about the component of a type (alphabetical letters) which includes the hex - height ,Cap height, Stem, Ascender, Descender, Baseline and so on...
Typeface and fonts coupled with how they can be combined was also discussed. We also talked about the categories of typefaces we have which includes;
- Serifs
- Sans-serif
- scripts
- Slab serif and others
- Lesson 4 & 5
In these lesson, we did our first set of practicals. I showed us how I designed the cover flier I used in introducing this design class and a new month flier for December. They were quite simple and concise. I will definitely leave the link to all these lessons below in case you missed it.
- Lesson 6
In this lesson, we discuss Alignment. I defined it as the manner at which visual elements are arranged in such a way that they look very orderly and in sync with one another.
We also talked about the basic types of alignment which includes the Right, Left and Center alignment and how it can be used effectively with an image in design.
- Lesson 7
In this lesson we discussed Colour Theory. I defined it as the art and science of manipulating colours. We also looked at basic colour classification which are the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours. We also looked at Classification based on perception which are the cool , warm and neutral colours.
Colour wheel and colour scheme was also touched in the course of the lecture. You will get more information about all of these via the link.
- Lesson 8
In this lesson, we continued with colours but this time we looked at Colour Hex which I defined as a six digit code comprising of alphabet, numbers and characters like #. This code is used to represent colours. It is distinct and unique.
We also discuss how colours can be effectively combines to make our design look great and also help in passing our desired message.
You can glean more of this from the lesson.
- Lesson 9 & 10
In this lesson, we had another practical class where I had to explain graphically how I design a flier for a friend who wanted to advertise his forex academy and another who wanted me to help out with a New year flier for her business. The designs are as seen below.
- Lesson 11
In this lesson we considered Image in design. We discuss the role of images in design, how to effectively use them in design and how to source good image for our designs. It quite detailed and exhaustive. Do check it out.
- Lesson 12
Here we had our last practical...if you can remember I said this design came as a result of some trial and errors. I explained that some of the mistake we make while designing can be the game changer for our designs. So don't be afraid to try new things or even make mistakes. It's part of learning.
....so here we go. We have all the recap of the lessons form lesson 1 to 12. Like I said, I would leave the links to all the lesson below, so you can get the full lesson, all for free...lols. Wait a minute, have you thought about what you'd have been charged if you were to get this out there...smiles. Just enjoy!
Here are the links to the lessons...also do well to drop your reviews about the lesson. Did you get value? Is there anything you would want me to consider in G102? Feel free to drop them in the comment section.
