HISTORY OF VOLUNTEERING

The verb "volunteer" was first recorded in 1755. It originated from the noun volunteer, which was derived from the Middle French voluntaire. In non-military terms, the word volunteering has been used more often since the 1630s. A volunteer army is a military branch that accepts individuals who volunteer for service.

During the Great Awakening, people began noticing the oppression of the poor. In 1851, the first YMCA was established in the U.S., and in the American Civil War, volunteers helped soldiers by sewing supplies.

In 1881, American Red Cross founder John Barton established the organization to mobilize volunteers for disaster relief.

The Salvation Army is a prominent organization that works with the poor. Although it's a charity, it has also organized various volunteer programs.

In the 20th century, various groups such as the Lions Club International and the Rotary International were founded.

During the Great Depression, people across the country worked together to volunteer for a specific need. During the Second World War, thousands of volunteer offices were established.

After the Second World War, people shifted their attention to other areas of service, such as helping the poor. The Peace Corps was established in 1960. This organization's growth was widely influenced by the War on Poverty. According to the US Department of Labor, about 64.5 million Americans volunteer each year. The total volunteer hours that Americans give are valued at $175 billion.
