Greetings Everyone.
On 15-June-2022, I visited my farm to uproot cassava and process the cassava into cassava flakes. It can be stressful but I was able to do it with the help of my family and friends. Below are basic Steps involved in cassava processing.
This is the first stage and this stage has to do with the uprooting of the cassava, as we all know Cassava is a tuber and grows underground, therefore to get access to the cassava it must be uprooted that is brought to the surface. After uprooting my younger siblings piled up the cassava at a particular spot in order to make the next step easier.
This is the second stage Cassava passes through, at this point the exterior part of the cassava is peeled off in order to grant you full access to the cassava itself. This task is easier with very sharp knives, this particular phase of the process lasted at least four hours as the Cassava earlier uprooted was quite much.
At the process of taking off the peels, the cassava tuber ends up dirty as a result of the sand that was on the peels that were taken off, even where it is kept after the peel has been taken off can introduce dirt to the cassava and all these makes washing the cassava after peeling a must. The washing task is not that difficult so it was assigned to my baby sister, after washing it was bagged and we looked for a way to transport it to the spot it will be grinded.
At this stage the Cassava is mashed into s paste using a machine, i doubt if cassava can be processed without this stage as it plays an important part in cassava processing. After the cassava paste is out of the machine, it is bagged up for pressing as pressing aids the removal of water by applying pressure on the bags.
At this point the cassava flour is filtered and the unwanted part are thrown away.
This is final stage involved in the processing of cassava into Cassava flakes or garri as it's called in my country, after filtering the cassava flour is poured into a pot that must have been on fire for quite sometime. The Cassava flour is allowed to heat and after few minutes if allowing it to heat up, you are expected to keep moving the cassava flour from one side of the pot to another so it does not get burnt.
