What is a promise? Give three (3) common reasons why promises are broken
Promise can be defined as a statement or assurance in which someone agrees to fulfill or do something for someone.
Why people break promises
Pressure
Most times, people are being pressured to make promises and In the end, they don't fulfill it.
Change
Change is constant, some people might make promises but in the future they might fail to fulfill them. For example is the marriage vow where couples promised to stick with each other through thick and thin. Divorce is quite rampant.
Unforeseen situations
This can equally make someone to break a promise. Especially unforseen circumstances that has to do with money, health issues e.t.c
Have you ever experienced a broken promise? How did it make you feel?
Have experienced broken promises so many times, but the one that really pained me was what happened In my Grade 9. I was In boarding school then. So Cousin sister's Traditional marriage was the next week before we came back for extension classes. A day before the traditional marriage, I went to take permission from the School manager to go home and attend the traditional marriage and he said okay that he will escort the next day.
I was so happy that my school Manager will be escorting me to an event. The next day I came in the morning, and he asked me to come in the afternoon, he kept on doing this until evening and I didn't attend the ceremony again and I was among the ashoebi. I was so angry.
How do you handle broken promises? Do you confront the person or let it go?
I depends on the person involved. If it was an older person I won't confront the person but if it's a younger person or someone in the same age bracket with me, I will confront the person.
Do you believe that some promises are meant to be broken? Why or why not?
Yes, it's good to keep promises but some promises are meant to be broken, especially when the promise when kept will affect the both parties.
What steps can be taken to rebuild trust after a promise has been broken
Forgiveness
First of all, we have to learn to forgive and let go, nobody is perfect and we should understand that. Forgiving and letting go will help the pain and hurt to fade away.
Talk to the person in question
Talk to the person in question if you can, tell him or her how you felt.
Listen to the person
Listen to the person's own side of the story and understand what happened.
Most times, is not people's fault that they break promises and this is the reason why it's good to listen to people's own side of the story before judging them.
