What is a tradition?

It can be defined as those beliefs, Customs, principles and Values which the members of a particular place holds in high esteem and therefore pass it down from generation to generation.

Do you believe in all the traditions of your country? If yes, prove, No, share your thoughts with us.

I believe in some Traditions in my Country Nigeria, the Traditions that promotes unity, social bonding and Fundamental human right. Also, I don't believe in some Traditions that stripes humans of their dignity of human beings like Female Genital Mutilation, Outcast system etc.

Can you mention at most 3 Disgusting traditions of your country that you forbid and why?

  • Outcast (OSU system)

They're so many Traditions in my Tribe Igbo that is very dehumanizing. One of then is the Outcast(OSU System). It's a Situation that occurs when someone from a family dedicates himself and the entire family to a Deity, thereby transforming themselves to the Slaves of the Deity. All the descendants born in that family automatically becomes an Outcast. These set of people are usually segregated and discriminated by the members of the Community called "Nwadiala" (Son of the Soil) The other members of the Community do not associate, talk or relates with the "OSU" because anyone that does so automatically becomes an Outcast. Before Christianity lots of marriages were cancelled because of this OSU cast system. This tradition is very inhuman because it tampers on one of the fundamental human rights which says that human beings has freedom to free association with people.

  • Killing of Twins

Before Christianity began in Igbo tribe and some other tribes in Nigeria, Twins were killed. According to our forefathers, they said that giving birth to Twins is a bad Omen which signifies evil and curse. This evil tradition usually has lots of Emotional Trauma on the families of these children. This Tradition tampers on the fundamental human right which says that every human being has the right to life. All thanks to Mary Slessor who helped to abolish this evil Tradition.

  • Human Sacrifice

In olden days, Human beings were sacrificed for several reasons like to appease the gods, for money ritual, to crown a new king, to bury a King or a great man e.t.c.

Are traditions in your country still held in high esteem, or are they fading away?

Yes they're some traditions still held in high esteem in my tribe, the Igbo tribe and they includes.

  • Postnatal Care (Omugwo)

This is a unique culture whereby the mother of the Woman that gives birth goes to take care of her daughter and grandchild after her delivery. The mother helps her daughter to cook, do house chores and also take care of the little child until she is strong enough to do things on her own. This tradition is very good because it gives the new mother opportunity to heal from Childbirth and also learn how to take care of a child from her mother. In the absence of the mother any other female matured relative can do the Omugwo.

  • Traditional marriage

According to people, this is where the main marriage happens because it involves paying of bride price. The whole process starts from the Introduction (Iku aka), paying of the bride price (Ime ego) and finally the bride is giving a cup of Palm wine by her father to show who her husband is and after which she and her husband hand in hand goes to her father for the Marriage Union to be blessed by him.

  • Wrestling(Igba Mgba)

This is another beautiful tradition practiced in Igbo land. It's usually a show of strength and Masculinity between able-bodied Young men and the person that is able to overpower and land the opponent on the floor is declared the winner. This tradition is very nice because it's entertaining, and it also fosters unity and togetherness in a Community.

What are those occasions that demand traditions to be performed before they become legal?

One of the Occasion that demands Tradition before it becomes legal is the Marriage, a man even after doing the Church Wedding must pay the Bride Price before the Marriage becomes Legal. Another occasion that demands tradition is the Crowning of a new king. Some traditional rules must be followed by the kingmakers to Crown a King.

Share your favorite country's tradition of all time.

My favorite Tradition of all time is the new Yam festival (Iri ji Ohuru). In my town, it's mostly celebrated in August. It's a Tradition in which the people thank God for a bountiful Harvest, this festival marks the beginning of new Yam Season. During this festival lot of meals prepared with yam like pounded yam and soup, roasted yam with oil, Porridge yam is prepared. Different dance groups also perform that day. During the occasion, the person with the biggest yam is giving a price inorder to encourage them. It usually a beautiful and Colorful Event in which people from far and wide travel back to their homeland to witness it, thereby enhancing family bonding.
