During my days as a student architect in an Architecture school, it is expected that you learn, understand and know how to produce a detailed architectural model of every design you do while in school.
Here are several reasons highlighting the importance of architectural models for students:
Visualization and Understanding:
Architectural models offer a physical and three-dimensional depiction of design concepts, aiding students in better visualizing and comprehending spatial relationships, proportions, and overall design compositions compared to traditional 2D drawings.
Scale and Proportion:
Models allow students to experiment with different scales and proportions, helping them develop a keen sense of balance and harmony in architectural design. Understanding how elements relate to each other in physical form enhances their grasp of design principles.
Communication of Ideas:
Models serve as powerful communication tools. They help students express their design ideas to peers, instructors, and clients more effectively. A well-crafted model can convey nuances and details that might be challenging to convey through drawings or digital presentations alone.
There are so much more to mention concerning the importance of architectural model but I will stop here.
I could remember when I was rushing to cut a design model and mistakenly cut into my finger nails… the blood split all over my drawings and it was 3:00AM that morning and all I could do was to look out for the available first aid to stop the bleeding till I get a proper medical attention.
It was never easy while studying architecture which is the most difficult course in the world, it requires passion, dedication, time, energy, resources and so much more to mention. But above all… it comes with a satisfaction because every beautiful city in the world today are designed by Architects.
And so much more!!!
