The Tortoise.
A Tortoise is a cold blooded reptil, they are the animal with the longest lifespans ranging from 150 to 180 years. The longest in record was 188 years old.
Some are adapted to life at sea while others are terrestrial. Both land and sea tortoise lay eggs in the sand. They can be found everywhere except Antarctica and Australia.
Tortoise are mostly vegetarian, their diet mostly consist of foliage, flowers and fruits. The tortoise shell is part of its skeleton, so they grow with it, they can't walk out of it but can hide inside it.
An endangered species.
Many species of tortoise we have today are considered as being endangered. A good example is the Ploughshare tortoise and the Radiated tortoise which are said to be the rarest tortoise on the planet. They are also critically endangered.
Radiated tortoise Found in southern Madagascar, this tortoise is also critically endangered. Even the Philippine Forest Turtle which can only be found along the Filipino island of Palawan is also ratted as critically endangered.
The biggest threats to the tortoise is lost of habitat. Deforestation, Pollution and agriculture are the major contributors to its habitat loss.
There is also the problem of overexploitation of this animal to be owned as pets. Those who are still free in the wild are affected by climate change.
You can also blame some pots of soup for the problems of the tortoise as shown below.
Uses of Tortoise
The tortoise is a rich source of protein for some homes, it has also been used as a key element in traditional medicine both herbal and spiritistic.
Local folklore have often used the tortoise as a symbol of intelligence and trickery. I was disapointed the first time i actually saw a tortoise. It showed no sign of extra intelligence.
Steps in drawing the Tortoise
Step1
I had to gathered all the needed materials for this drawing.
The materials are:
- A Plain Paper
- A Pencil
- An Eraser
- A Sharpener
- Crayons for colouring
Step 2
After collecting all the needed materials, I got my drawing canvas ready.
Step 3
I started drawing the tortoise from its upper shell.
Step 4
An this stage, I drew the lower part of the shell, it will help me determine where to correctly fix its limbs and head.
Step 5
At this stage i added its legs and the head of the Tortoise.
Step 6
The drawing at this point is almost finished, the eraser was used to clean off some parts of the shell covered by the head and foreleg.
Step 7
With minimal shedding on the shell and legs, the drawing is now finished. Its time to take a snapshot with the finished work.
Hope you like our Tortoise.
