Today I am going to share an illustration and book review of a book that I really like, and that I have read a few times. The Great Gatsby, written by Scott Fitzgerald in 1925.

Hoy les voy a compartir una ilustración y book review de un libro que me gusta mucho, y que he leido un par de veces. El Gran Gatsby, escrito por Scott Fitzgerald en el año 1925.

Who Was Scott Fitzgerald?/ ¿Quién era Scott Fitzgerald?

Francis Scott Kay Fitzgerald was born in Saint Paul, on September 24, 1896 and died in Hollywood in 1940. He was an American novelist and writer who later became one of the best writers of the 20th century. In his works we can see and feel the jazz era, even now, almost 100 years after he wrote some of his works, his stories are full of life and energy, and may be compared with current times.

Francis Scott Kay Fitzgerald nació en Saint Paul, el 24 de septiembre de 1896 y murió en Hollywood en 1940. Fue un novelista y escritor Estadounidense que se convirtió posteriormente en uno de los mejores escritores del siglo XX. En sus obras podemos ver y sentir la era del jazz, aún ahora, casi 100 años después de que escribió sus obras, sus temas son vigentes y sus narraciones llenas de vida.

The Great Gatsby/ El Gran Gatsby

I first read the Great Gatsby when I was studying 20th century American literature at university.

Leí el Gran Gatsby por primera vez cuando estudiaba literatura norteamericana del siglo XX en la universidad.

For me, the great Gatsby is about the American dream, even though this concept emerged popularized after the great depression of 1931, Scott Fitzgerald had already understood the idea, and had expressed it in his novel much earlier, and perhaps this is what makes this novel an icon of American literature.

Para mí, el gran Gastby trata sobre el sueño americano, aun cuando este concepto surge popularizado después de la gran depresión de 1931, ya Scott Fitzgerald había comprendido la idea, y la había plasmado en su novela mucho antes, y quizás esto es lo que hace de esta novela un icono de la literatura estadounidense.

This dream in which everyone has opportunities in a land that is rushing towards progress, where the poor can be rich; It is perfectly reflected in his work, in which a man with a mysterious past, a new rich man about whom not much is known, enters the scene of the New York bourgeoisie.

The story is told by Nick Carraway, which guarantees that we will not know our protagonist more than what Nick knows about him, so the mystery about his origin and past is guaranteed until the very end.

La historia está narrada por Nick Carraway, lo que nos garantiza que no conoceremos de nuestro protagonista más que lo que Nick conoce de él, así que el misterio sobre su origen y pasado está garantizado hasta el mismísimo final.

The entire plot is driven by Gatsby's desire for a reunion with Daisy, an old love who is determined to recover and who has moved him to where he is, living his own version of the American dream.

Toda la trama se ve impulsada por el deseo de Gatsby en un reencuentro con Daisy, un viejo amor que está determinado a recuperar y que lo ha movido a llegar a donde se encuentra, viviendo su propia versión del sueño americano

However, we will be evolved not only in Gatsby's dilemmas, but also in the dilemmas of Nick, our narrator. The American dream takes many shades, some darker than others, and thus shows us that opulence and ambition can drag people to not very pleasant destinations.

Sin embargo, nos veremos evueltos no solo en los dilemas de Gatsby, sino también en los dilemas de Nick, nuestro narrador. El sueño americano toma muchos matices, unos más oscuros que otros, y así nos muestra que la opulencia y la ambición puede arrastrar a la gente a destinos no muy placenteros.

The Illustration/ La Ilustración

Although Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby are my favorite characters in this play, I want to share an illustration of Daisy, this beautiful, rich and shallow woman that Gatsby fell in love with.

Aunque Nick Carraway y Jay Gatsby son mis personajes favoritos en esta obra, quiero compartirles una ilustración de Daisy, esta hermosa, rica y superficial mujer de la que Gatsby se enamoró.

The wonderful thing about a great writer's narration is when you can generate empathy with each of his characters, even when you don't share much in common. Thus, we understand a little better the role of women in a rich society, being this an object of exhibition and pleasure.

Lo maravilloso de la narración de un gran escritor es cuando puedes generar empatía con cada uno de sus personajes, aun cuando no compartas mucho en común. Así, comprendemos un poco mejor el papel de la mujer en una sociedad rica, siendo esta un objeto de exhibición y placer.
