The song "The Spirit Carries On" was released in 1999 which was found on the album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. This song was created by John Petrucci whose album theme is related and has a unity of all songs on the album. In this song the story is still continued from the previous songs which tell Nicholas who was still under conscious that his soul already knew all the events and did not need to fear death. Finally it was revealed that the killer was Edward who pretended to be good with the intention of seizing Victoria from Julian and it was not Julian who had been accused as the murderer despite his bad temper.

And Victoria's soul in Nicholas said that he had to be strong and strong in facing his future because Victoria's soul had calmed down when everything was revealed. And the message from the hypnotherapist in this song is "death is not the end of everything, but just a transition." This song is also the ending of the Dream Theater thematic album, where Nicholas is freed from Victoria who has been shadowing his life all the time. This album tells the story of a woman named Victoria who was born in 1928 who was killed and has not revealed who killed her for decades, until Victoria was reincarnated as Nicholas who was born in 1999.

The skills of the Dream Theater personnel are shown in this song by bringing Progressive nuances that can be cut to the heart starting from the twang of piano, melodian guitar to thumping drums that are accompanied by choir sounds. This song does not enter the charts but one of the most favorite for Dream Theater fans around the world. The first lyrics of this song are taken from the title of the painting "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" by Paul Gauguin in 1897-1898. This song gives advice to everyone, as the saying goes "As smart as someone is hiding rottenness, it will definitely smell bad." There are also many Indonesian singers who sing this song like Putri Ayu, Eva AFI etc.

The female vocal backing in this song is Theresa Thomason and accompanied by several people who joined the choir, namely Mary Canty, Shelia Slappy, Mary Smith, Jeanette Smith, Clarence Burke Jr., Carol Cyrus, Dale Scott. Then the one mixing this song is Kevin Shirley and Rory Romano.

Lyrics:

Where did we come from?
Why are we here?
Where do we go when we die?
What lies beyond
And what lay before?
Is anything certain in life?

They say, "Life is too short
The here and the now
And you're only given one shot "
But could there be more?
Have I lived before
Or could this be all that we've got?

(Reff):

If I die tomorrow
I'd be alright
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

melodian

I used to be frightened of dying
I used to think death was the end
But that was before
I'm not scared anymore
I know that my soul will transcend

I may never find all the answers
I may never understand why
I may never prove
What I know to be true
But I know that I still have to try

return to (Reff)

"Move on, be brave
Don't weep in my grave
Because I am no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear "

melodian
{choir}

Safe in the light that surrounds me
Free of the fear and the pain
My questioning mind
Has helped me to find
The meaning in my life again

Victoria's real, I finally feel
At peace with the girl in my dreams
And now that I'm here
It's perfectly clear
I found out what all of this means

return to (Reff)
