Hand sanitizer Formulations || Market crisis amidst coronavirus pandemic, making my own hand sanitizer

Everyone attention is on coronavirus now and trying to self-defense from each position. The coronavirus situation is getting worse every day all over the world. The number of cases identified are 382341 around the world. Among those affected patients, 16568 are already expired and 102501 recovered.

Here in Bangladesh, we are also worried about the current situation. Thirty-nine cases already identified. In this turbulence situation, people are also worried about the future. People are storing everything including regular medicines. Hand sanitizers are already out of market.

In this situation, being a chemical lab manager, I decided to make hand sanitizers for our staffs. The formulation was collected from WHO website. All the required chemicals which are required to prepare hand sanitizer, is available in my lab. Here are the list of chemicals-

IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) 99.8% or Ethanol 96%. In my preparation, I used IPA. You will find this chemical in any chemical shop.

Hydrogen peroxide 3%. This is a regular chemical for lab use. You can also purchase from the chemical shop.

Glycerol 98%. This is another common item which is available in any regular shop.

Grade 3 or distilled water. You can also use boiled water.

Here is the formulation from WHO. I have followed this to prepare my hand sanitizer. I have used IPA to prepare this. The below chart is for 1000 ml hand sanitizer preparation. You can use Ethanol instead of IPA. If you use Ethanol, the required amount will be 833.3 ml.

Steps of preparation:

We need to decant 751.5 ml of Isopropyl alcohol in a 1000 ml container. Before that, the jar need to be cleaned properly.

Then, add 41.7 ml of Hydrogen peroxide with the existing Isopropyl alcohol and mix well.

Add 14.5 ml of Glycerol with the solution with measuring cylinder. As Glycerol is viscous solution, need to the rinse the measuring cylinder with little amount of distilled water.

Then, mark up the solution with distilled water up to 1000 ml. Shake the solution with hands gently to mix it well. Finally, keep the solution in a separate place for 72 hours before use.

Now, the process of hand sanitizer making is completed. You can transfer the solution as per your required container. I have transferred it to a 50ml container.

Use of hand sanitizer: Put few drops of sanitizer in your palm and rub it both side of your hands until dry.

Caution: Keep the solution out of reach of children. As the solution is flammable, keep it away from flame.

Last but not the least; we have to be vigilant always. Maintain social distance and avoid visiting the people who are already affected.
