The beach in Durban is the perfect place to learn how to surf, so when a friend of mine offered to teach me, I jumped at the opportunity.

Although it was overcast, the climate is tropical, so it was actually very warm and the Indian Ocean is always a pleasure.

It's a lot easier to stand up on a bigger board. They are a lot more forgiving when it comes to balance, so perfect for beginners.

First I had to learn how to "pop-up", from lying in a push-up position you have to swing your legs under your body, while keeping your head up.

It's pretty easy on solid ground...

...much more difficult in the water - even on the small practice waves near the jetty.

After bailing MANY times, I eventually managed to catch a few waves.

I'm glad you learnt something new from a friend. I am hoping to visit the beach this year end to do same as well.

Go for it! It takes a lot of practice, but it's super fun.
