NIGHT WORK, HARMFUL TO HEALTH?

I work in the Marine Logistics Management, which is mainly responsible for loading and unloading all drilling materials and equipment for gas extraction, oil and derivatives. As such, our guard system requires daytime, mixed and night operations, being ready for any eventuality that may arise or something that is required on the oil platforms.

A popular saying says that the night was made to sleep and, of course, a large part of the population still follows this rule. However, to satisfy the growth in the demand for production and services, the opening of jobs with unconventional hours has become increasingly common.

There are many jobs that have developed overnight work hours. Health professionals, security guards and night watchmen, frequent flyers, and airline pilots and cases like us oil tankers.

Some studies show that the effects of night work significantly reduce quality of life and life expectancy, among other fundamental human factors.

Sleep is essential to our lives, yet it is often overlooked for work.

It is not easy to avoid this type of employment or period of work, as there are many basic public services that are performed at night. However, there are many institutions that at least limit working hours at night.

SLEEP: WHY WORKING AT NIGHT CAN BE HARMFUL TO HEALTH?

Working at night and sleeping during the day is a routine that goes against a biological characteristic. Our body is predisposed to sleep when it is dark, since the decrease in luminosity induces the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the onset of sleep.

In addition, the quality of sleep during the night is superior to that of the day. It is there that the body produces substances such as leptin, which regulates a person's satiety, and insulin, which is responsible for metabolizing carbohydrates in the body.

When we have no choice but to work at night, it is essential to look for some tips that help our bodies to function as close to normal as possible.

Sleeping is a necessity, as well as eating and drinking, and we must promote good sleep hygiene throughout the population to receive good services from those who work in this difficult condition, which is to be awake when your body would like to be asleep.

The advantage of my work is that our activities are outdoors, we have the privilege of observing from the base of operations the beautiful city of Carupano- Sucre State Venezuela. The beach air is one of the greatest blessings we have.
