Ink Sketch And Description Of A Mursi Tribal Woman

I'd like to share this pen sketch I did depicting a Woman of the Mursi tribe of Africa. The Mursi tribe of Africa are quite fascinating and distinct from other tribes in Africa. They are a tribe of over 10,000 members residing in the Omo valley in Southern Ethiopia near the border with Sudan. Their culture has long been in existence for hundreds of years and has been preserved for generations.

Their distinct features for the women are the plated lips(Plates in their elongated lips and sometimes their ears), scarifications and revealing of the upper parts of their body. Some may regard this as barbaric, but they believe all their actions are meaning and this has been their culture and identity for years.

Only the women have plated and elongated lips which signifies presence or absence of a spouse and the state of their virginity.

The members of the Mursi tribe are mostly farmers, hunters and herdmen.

I did this drawing with a black ball point pen and pelican paper.
Here are the steps in the drawing;

First, I drew the outline of the woman's face with a plate in her elongated lower lips.

Next, I shaded and added some details to her face.

Finally, I shaded the plate in her lips and her ear until I got an appealing result.
