Decentralization means one thing to me:

Freedom

We all live in a centralized world where power and money are concentrated in the hands of a few people or a few institutions.
Blockchain is the greatest technological innovation of the last 12 years and is born from an unbridled desire for freedom. It borns from the desire to break the oppressive chains of centralization.

What do you think are the fundamental building blocks of blockchain?

The fundamental building blocks of the blockchain are:

Decentralization: is the principle on which the idea of blockchain is based. The information is not stored in one place, on a single server but is distributed and known by all the nodes that make up the blockchain.

Security: decentralizing information allows you to have a very high degree of security. If a node is compromised the information is not lost as it is contained in all the other nodes.
For example, if we write and save a simple word file on our home PC and our PC explodes we have lost everything. If we consider as an example that our pc is a node of a blockchain then we will not be worried at all, the information of our file will be kept in every node of the block chain.

Transparency: All information is available and visible to all blockchain participants.

Speed and Convenience: all transactions are much faster and much less expensive than a centralized structure.
For example, on Steem transactions have a cost of 0.

Immutability: all information is immutable, it is stored and cannot be changed and this guarantees that the information is reliable and truthful.
For example, the application of the blockchain could eliminate the problem of fake news.

What does decentralization mean to you, is it important, why?

It is important because where there is a strong centralization of decision-making power, of money or of information, there is no freedom, there is no democracy and there is no well-being.

To understand the importance of decentralization, just think of the examples that history has given us.
Think of any dictatorial regime present or past.

Is there an example of dictatorship or regime that has brought real well-being to a country or people? No and only a fanatic could say otherwise.

Here is blockchain is a form of digital democracy.

What are your thoughts on blockchain and decentralization?

I think blockchain is a concrete application of the principle of decentralization and I think it is a good example of how many benefits a decentralized structure brings with it.

I also think that centralized powers such as banks will try in every way to counter the spread of the principle of decentralization.
Maybe they will adopt the blockchain to simplify internal processes but will always fight against the principle of decentralization.

Or the strong and centralized powers will try to create apparently decentralized "hybrid" blockchains with for example private nodes.
An example is Libra the crypto conceived by Facebook.

Can a decentralized blockchain be centralized?

Yes unfortunately. And Justin Sun's attempt to centralize Steem (fortunately failed) is proof of this.

If a blockchain is small and has few nodes, it is consequently more fragile and easily attackable.

The struggle between centralization and decentralization will be a tough and long struggle but I know which side to stand on, from the side of freedom.
