We found gold! The mother load of the wild almond trees that line the river banks originated from here!

Greetings to all and this is my first post in the Gems community.
Blame my good friend @tattoodjay for inviting me here Lol. We are on steem since 2017 and the income from every post on our blog goes to our charity.
But let me tell you about our great recent escape here!

This is the last farm in our area, situated right next to the mountains. It is an Olive farm and in the center of the photo you can see the olive trees!

IMG_0291.JPG

Here it is! The full wild almond tree and it must be at least 100 years old!

IMG_0296.JPG

Wow! Obviously we picked a bucket full of the wild almonds and Marian (my wife) dreamt of making cakes and biscuits!

IMG_0299.JPG

Plenty almonds just waiting for us to pick them. We can even give most of them to the homes that care for orphans!

But there's a catch here! THEY ARE POISON!

IMG_0318.JPG

Here's another old almond tree and you can see by its roots that it drinks water from the river!

Look at the size of this old almond lady!

Now about the poison!
We were so excited and walked so far to find these beauties. Oh man we could feed a village with the almonds.
Until Marian decided to research their origin!

If you eat wild almonds you will die!

A bit of history!

"Wild Almond, scientific name; "Brabejum stellatifolium"
In 1652 Jan van Riebeeck arrived in the Cape from Holland...There was little regard for the local Khoi-Khoi people, who grazed their cattle in the area. And conflict soon broke out. The Wild Almond trees' fruit formed a significant part of the Khoi-Khoi diet and the KhoiKhoi continued to invade the settlers area to get at the fruit".

"About the Wild Almond.
This is a member of the Protea family (Proteaceae), with it's closest relative being the Australian Macadamia Tree. This unusual link points back millions of years to when Australia and Africa both formed part of the continent Gondwana. When Gondwana split up over 130 million years ago, the Protea family was split up and Brabejum is now the only surviving branch of this family tree on the African continent".

"While we associate the name with delicious nuts, these are definitely not for consumption as they are poisonous. The Khoi-Khoi, who included them as part of their diet, had discovered how to remove the poison from the fruit by soaking them in water for several days, and then boiling and roasting them. The Khoi-Khoi were experts at this process, and this definitely should not be tried at home. The old settlers in the Cape learnt the Khoi-Khoi way of preparing the Wild Almond fruit as a sort of "coffee". Many individuals were poisoned and died from consuming it".

There is a saying - Knowledge is gold! You really found the gold!

Oh I like this saying and it is so true.
Blessings to you and the family and thank you!

That's a bit scary. Happy to hear you found out in time. Obviously other almonds are safe, but is it easy to tell the difference?

Thank you Sir Steve.
I asked Marian to do some research, as it troubled me when I saw no signs of birds eating the fruits.
The wild almond shells are also much darker than the normal ones.
I can see why so many of the old settlers died when they ate the stuff.
They had no way of knowing.

wow beautiful photographs of almond tree. 100 years is long duration.

Thank you my friend and we live in a very historic place!
Blessings!

Good that you found out they were poison :o

It was the birds that tipped me off my friend. There were no birds eating the fruit and that warned me that something was wrong. I grew up on a farm many years ago and fortunately learned many things in nature. Often times the hard way hahaha.
Blessings and thank you!

That's part of growing up - finding out the hard way lol :)

Now this is a great truth my friend hahaha.
Blessings!

Proper preparation found in the nick of time, good thinking ahead to not become ill from picking wild without researching first.

Wishing you a wonderful new week Stephen and Marian.... never forget to mention Troy.

Do you also feel like you are lost on the farm Lady Joan?
I worked the steemit farm for almost 3 years and now they sold the farm and many little plots are springing up all over the place. Lol.
I know it's early days and that there are teething problems, but nothing is more frustrating to work on a post and halfway through the app decides to conk out. Such is life!
Blessings also to you guys and hope we all have a better week.

Yes, lost is a good word to use, will find my feet slowly and start again. Always one day at a time....

Let the sun shine. We will survive. Starting all over again.
3 songs for you my friend.
Oh, and another one. One day at a time. (the 1974 version by KK)
Blessings!

Wise to stay away for a while JJ.
Many new headaches here to negotiate and I so wish we had computers in the 60's. But, life goes on.
Btw. I placed a first post in GEMS today, but not doing well at all.
Blessings to you guys!
