I have been living in Kharkiv city for almost two years but somehow I haven't explored the entire city yet, it's so big. Maybe I have explored only 40% of the entire Kharkiv Oblast, sub-urban and village part is out of my mind now.
I have already mentioned in one of my posts that I haven't visited 7 wonders of Kharkiv city yet. Well, I told you this year gonna be interesting and I will finish exploring the entire Kharkiv city hopefully.
Kharkiv is the second-largest city of Ukraine, it was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic before, later on, 1934 Kyiv became the capital city of Ukraine. When I first came here, I was astonished to see the building structure and architecture. It was obvious because I am an architect. When people first come here, they observe people, food and culture and I observed architecture.
Yes, same concrete post-lintel structured building but the twist is exterior, entrance and wall size.
Ukraine is a cold country and Kharkiv is an old city, so the maximum building is from soviet period. Exteriors are basically soviet European style considering the cold climate.
One major thing I have noticed was groove lines, this is the main characteristic of these buildings. Colors don't matter.
If you closely noticed, you will see these horizontal groove lines. Well, modern buildings or apartments don't maintain this groove line characteristic. Also, you can see decorative columns and arch-shaped windows. Also, the depth of the window from the wall is almost 18-24 inches.
These columns are basically Greek-style columns, some are just for decorative purposes and don't bear any load.
Administrative office buildings or Government office buildings are unique than the normal ones. These are normal building where the podium is used for offices and upper floors are all apartments.
Office buildings are maximum 5-6 storied, apartments are highest 10-13 storied. But modern apartments are completely different from this architecture, they are modern, not traditional following new architectural design.
It's hard to design the exterior of cold climate building because you have to provide proper insulators as well with the thick walls. Also, you can't design balcony because of snow.
Lack of proper maintenance, the building can be destroyed like this...
I personally don't like the entrance of the buildings, it's pretty hard to identify old buildings entrances. But modern buildings are not like that, nowadays they concentrate on the patio as well.
This is a modern design building structure, nowadays they are focusing on glasses and other materials like ALUCOBOND as well. Modern structures are beautiful.
Well, I know, a city is can be known for its architecture, culture, and people. I think the Kharkiv city represents the Soviet period and it's feel good to explore the post-modern era of architecture. Because, wherever we go, we will be able to explore new designs always with new techniques.
But old buildings are represented culture, heritage, and history of architecture.

Hi! Being an Ukrainian born I have never visited Kharkiv City. Hence, its nice to explore the beauty of such an authentic architecture from miles away. I involved in construction management industry and always loved to travel to different cities and admire its architecture.
The architecture of Kharkiv is quite similar to other western cities such as Lviv or Ivano-Frankivsk. Would be nice to visit Kharkiv one day.
