Behind The Photo: An iconic sculpture exhibition in Pernambuco (Recife).

Let's go back to Pernambuco (Recife, northeastern Brazil... a warm place full of beautiful beaches and an enviable natural beauty) and this time, what I will highlight in this post - through the photos taken by me - is a type of extremely unusual artisanal work and which clearly shows part of the great creative power of a people who help to build the nation of my country.

The work I am referring to are fun sculptures (in the shape of chickens) that are made from a single raw material (dead coconut trunks) and that are permanently exposed to all the people who are visiting Porto de Galinhas (in free translation into English Chicken Port), a beach with clear waters, inviting temperatures and great weather that is located in a kind of county called Ipojuca.

The power of the local authority that frightened the northeast region in decades past.

The owner of this incredible work is Gilberto Carcará, an artisan born in Piauí, but who was raised in Olinda (a city known for its craftsmanship). According to the artist himself, the chickens (which, by the way, are responsible for naming the beach) were the way he found to print the identity of the place in a creative and very attractive way, representing all the joy that infects the place.

A hilarious representation of the figure of Monalisa (and her weird beauty) in its northeast version.

In addition, he also wanted to show the good humor of the people who live in that region and the meanings of the sculptures are varied, from representing the image of famous people or showing some of the main characteristics that can be seen when along the beach. It is a very inspiring work and it pleases not only the people who live in the region, but all the people who visit it.

Michael Jackson in his comically styled gallinaceous version.

The look of the sculptures has a very comical soul and seeing them in person shows how professional (and complex!) Carcará's work is, which went to great lengths to create a work that became a huge reference for this beach and that became to an even more popular tourist spot. At the same time that this work steals a lot of laughs, it piques our attention for being something unique.

A friendly and creative reminder encouraging visitors to use sunscreen.

Each of the sculptures has a special characteristic and it is very interesting to discover what the true meaning of each one is. There is no doubt that they are an attraction that wins the public's interest in an almost immediate way and this work always gets a lot of praise for being something so well done and whose raw material is such a simple material.

The "exaltation" of a profession highly valued here: Cook.

Every time I have the opportunity to go to this beach, I make sure to visit all the sculptures that are there because it is always a very fun, pleasant walk and that escapes the traditional route (which are the beaches). The culture of the Brazilian people is very strong and that of the Northeastern people in particular has a very particular essence that can easily be defined anywhere in the world.

This is my participation for the Behind The Photo contest - Edition #8
