Trying to pinpoint the origins of the first pizza is a surprisingly contentious topic. According to some, this popular delicacy is based on early unleavened breads served in Rome in the early centuries. Others date the origins of modern pizza back to Greek pita flatbread.
It is widely accepted that the original pizza as we know it today was invented by Raffaele Esposito of Naples, Italy. Esposito's creation was created to commemorate Queen Margherita's visit to Naples in 1889, and he decorated it with the colours of the Italian flag, including white cheese, green basil, and red tomatoes (tomatoes, which had arrived from the west about 60 years earlier, were originally thought to be poisonous, but by Esposito's invention, they were no longer poisonous but by Esposito’s time they were already embraced by Italian cuisine).
As time passed and the turn of the century arrived, Italian immigrants introduced this dish to America. In America, the first pizza opened in 1905. It remained almost entirely popular among immigrants until the end of World War II, when returning American soldiers brought back a love of the pizza they had encountered overseas. With then, the pizza boom in America began, and this food transitioned from an underground Italian snack to a mainstream dinner.
