Also known as Cattley guava, Cherry guava or 'Goyave de Chine' in Mauritius, this fruit comes from a small tree in the Myrtaceae family.
When we are in its season, it is always so much fun going out with the family to pick them up!
The last time I went was couple of months ago and below you can see my daughter Rheem enjoying her day picking up strawberry guavas at a place called Plaines Champagne, a famous spot for this activity in Mauritius!
The whole fruit can be eaten as both the thin skin and juicy interior are soft and tasty.
You can also make jam with it...simply cook them with sugar and strain, the taste is simply amazing!
It is free to pick them up in the forest around the country, but we do have some people who sells them too on the roadside for those who don't have the time picking them!
Today at my restaurant, my sister brought some for me to use...I seized this opportunity to take some photos and show you how the fruits look like and I'll try explain the taste too!
How it is inside!?
Here I cut it in half for you to get an idea of the inside of the fruit!
The pulp is creamy-white with a melting and juicy texture with small seeds which are semi-hard but easily eatable!
How does it taste like!?
Strawberry Guavas have an extremely pleasant taste, very refreshing , sweet when fully ripe, with a slightly sour strawberry-like flavor.
They can be enjoyed when semi-ripe too...with a pinch of salt and chili!
