Did you know that there is a hidden part of the Internet that has much greater capacity than the part of the web that you use every day? This hidden part is known as the Deep Web.

What is the Deep Web?

The Deep Web is a term that refers to the parts of the World Wide Web (www) that search engines cannot index. Compared to an iceberg, the Deep Web is the part of the iceberg that is below the surface of the water. Even though you can't see it, it is estimated that the Deep Web has a very large capacity which is about 4-5 times bigger than the Surface Web (the web that you can see).

When you do everyday online activities, such as browsing the e-commerce web, answering e-mail, or reading blogs, you are accessing the Surface Web or the Visible Web. This section can be seen by internet users and search engines so that it can be indexed by Google. In contrast to the Deep web whose existence is hidden so it cannot be indexed by search engines.

Deep Web same the Dark Web

Until now there are still many people who think that the deep web and the dark web are two synonymous terms. This is why many people associate the term Deep Web with negative things. In fact, the Deep Web and the Dark Web are two different terms and cannot be considered synonymous.

Even deeper than the Deep Web, you will find a part of the Internet known as the Dark Web. The dark web is that part of the Internet that is not indexed by search engines and can only be accessed through a special web browser.

You will not be able to find it using a common web browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari or others. The most widely used software to access the Dark Web is Onion Browser.

If it is again compared to an iceberg, then this Dark Web is at the bottom end of the iceberg that is submerged and dark. So the area is smaller than the Deep Web. The Dark Web actually contains various types of sites, but so far it is more known as a site that contains illegal activities. You should avoid the Dark Web as you may have trouble accessing it.

Contents of the Deep Web?

The deep web contains content that search engines can't see, such as data behind firewalls, internal company documents, customer data, and more. But you need to know that some of the most important parts of the Deep Web include two things, namely:

A collection of protected databases, both private and public. The database in question is not connected to any other area of the web, so it can only be viewed and searched from within the database system itself.

An intranet is an internal network used by companies, governments, or educational facilities to communicate and control the private aspects of their organizations.

How to Access the Deep Web?

As I explained earlier, the Deep Web refers to that part of the Internet that search engines cannot identify. This section is either password protected or intentionally made uncrawlable by search engines. Content or data on the Deep Web is deliberately hidden from the Surface Web to protect the privacy of its users. So, chances are you are already accessing this Deep Web every day.

For example, when you access your finances online, you can log into the system with your user ID and password. You certainly don't want other Internet users to be able to find the information it contains through search engines. Therefore, the page is hidden from Surface Web and cannot be indexed by web crawlers.

Safe to Access the Deep Web?

The Deep Web is a relatively safe part of the Internet for you to visit, especially when compared to accessing the Dark Web. However, accessing the Deep Web is not without the risk of cyber attacks.

You have to remember that the Deep Web contains sensitive data which is often the target of criminals. That's why you need to protect access to your account or database with a strong password. Also, when accessing personal information, you should avoid public Wi-Fi networks as they are vulnerable to being used by hackers to view sensitive information in your accounts.

Conclusion

Although the Deep Web is relatively safe to operate, you still need to be careful when accessing it because hackers are always looking for ways to steal sensitive data.
