With its one-of-a-kind rewards system, the Steem blockchain is a blockchain unlike any other. Curating contents is the most typical way to earn rewards on the Steem blockchain.

The concept of curation as it relates to the Steem blockchain will be covered in detail in this first episode of the Steem library, #Steemlibrary series.

The following major topics will be the subject of this article:

  • Understanding Proof-of-Brain and how it relates to curation?

  • Who do we refer to as Curator?

  • What does curation involve?

  • How does being a curator feel like?

  • What effects do self-voting, plagiarism, and content reuse have on the curation process?

Understanding Proof-of-Brain and how it relates to curation?

We must define Proof of Brain in order to prove that the Steem Blockchain needs curation.

To start, you must recognize that the ways that cryptosystems and blockchains validate and reward activity on their individual blockchains vary. These are a few of them:

  • Proof-Of-Work

This is the conventional technique of mining cryptocurrency, this requires a powerful computer to validate blocks and the individuals (miners) are being rewarded

  • Proof-Of-Stake

This is another technique, this involves the highest cryptoholder on the blockchain is given the power to validate new blocks to earn rewards

Since each of the techniques mentioned uses a computer-based algorithm to validate blockchain activity and compensate users, they are often referred to as consensus mechanisms.

The Proof of Brain system's reward mechanism is based on subjective evaluations of value.

The Proof of Brain (PoB) system was created to promote and reward content producers and curators. It is an incentive system for token-based communities like Steemit to compensate users for their activities.

About how the Proof of Brain mechanism works, the Steem blue paper covers it all

The users who produce content are adding value to the network by creating material that will
drive new users to the platform, as well as keep the existing users engaged and entertained. This
aids in distributing the currency to a wider set of users and increases the network effect. The
users that take time to evaluate and vote on content are playing an important role in distributing
the currency to the users who are adding the most value. The blockchain rewards both of these
activities relative to their value based on the collective wisdom of the crowd collected through
the stake-weighted voting system.

Steem Bluepaper

We may easily infer from the Steem Bluepaper that the Proof of Brain mechanism reward users based on their intellectual prowess. They may do this in two ways: first, by producing informative and interesting material; and, second, by determining the value of content through curating.

This now lead us to the question, What is Curation?

The phrase "curation" is frequently used on the Steem blockchain. However, in my opinion and using a straightforward definition, curation is just the process of evaluating and giving a piece of content posted on the Steem blockchain a value.

Keep in mind that Steem uses a Proof of Brain (PoB) consensus mechanism, which means that, in contrast to other blockchain consensus mechanisms that rely more on automated inputs, fellow humans (like me and you) explore the blockchain and determine whether the contents being shared are worthwhile. If deemed deserving, upvotes are used to give them value.

The entire process by which users on the Blockchain review shared material (posts) and give it value by voting on it is known as curation.

Who do we refer to as Curator?

Curators are users that upvotes or add value to contents or materials on the chain. The curator is the one who examines the blockchain's contents and gives them value. The amount of value you can add to a content solely depends on your Steem power, this is the amount of Steem locked/staked. So our vote worth as curators with small SP, however, almost never adds up to anything in terms of token payouts.

Like I said earlier, it depends on the amount of Steem Power that us why we most likely view whales, who have a significant amount of SP, as the major curators. This may not be accurate, but it is not wholly incorrect either.

The majority of communities on the Steem blockchain will entrust the curation process to a select group of community members who have proven themselves to be reliable and trustworthy. The members of the community has two options: either they can create a curation account, delegate SP to it, and utilize it to upvote meaningful and high-quality content or create a curation trail and follow it, this implies that whenever the trail vote all the members vote as well.

What does curation entail?

Curation entails a lot;

  • Firstly, It is essentially necessary for the curator to read the entirety of the text that is included in the shared post before they can interpret it.

  • Secondly, the curator must additionally check the shared material for plagiarism using plagiarism checker.

  • In addition, to make sure that there hasn't been any copyright violation, the curator will carefully review each picture used in the post and its sources.

  • Lastly, if there are any improvements or correction that need to be done before the post can receive upvote, the curator may leave a comment in the form of feedback for the content creator.

How does being a curator feel like?

I've worked as one of the curators for the Steemit community, so I understand how it feels. First of all, reading through posts posted by a variety of people, checking for plagiarism and copyright violations, and then upvoting based on the guidelines guiding the curation team are quite difficult tasks.

A curator must have a lot of patience, sound judgment, the capacity for critical and analytical thinking, a strong sense of justice, and many other qualities.

What effects do Plagiarism, and content reuse have on the curation system?

Plagiarism, and dishonest content reuse all goes against the core tenets of the Proof of Brain System. Plagiarism, which is essentially the same as content theft. In addition to harming the reputation of the offender, plagiarism puts the Stewm blockchain in a precarious position and increases the likelihood of legal action.

The goal of content recycling is to get incentives for sharing a post that has previously received just reward in the past. If a post has previously gone unrecognized, it may be appropriate to recycle it with a clear explanation of why. Of course, this is only appropriate if the community permits it. Posts that are reused completely after a few years or months in the hopes that they won't be noticed are regarded as plagiarized and will suffer the same penalties as plagiarized content. Communities need to establish what ethical and unethical content recycling means, in my opinion.

Final Thoughts and Outlook

Two key activities, content creation and content curation, have been shown to constitute the vital part of the Steem blockchain thus far. All parties involved, including the authors and curators, must actively participate in both activities.

We'll examine the source of curation rewards in the upcoming #Steemlibrary series. We will cover many concepts, including the curation trail, delegation's role in curation incentives, and much more.
