Plasma is a framework for improving scalability in public blockchains like Ethereum. The plasma chain is written in detail in the plasma whitepaper. The Plasma chain is built on top of another blockchain, sometimes called the "root chain". Each "child chain" originates from the root chain and is usually governed by a smart rule assigned to the parent chain.

Plasma's function, among other chains, is to act as a bridge for users to transfer crypto between the Ethereum Mainnet and the Plasma chain. Although it appears to act like a sidechain. However, plasma chains serve to protect the Ethereum mainnet. It acts as their security guard as opposed to sidechains.

Plasma vs Sidechain

A sidechain is an independently managed blockchain connected to the Ethereum mainnet via a side bridge. Users exchange tokens between the two blockchains for transactions on the sidechain, reducing transactions on the Ethereum mainnet and improving scalability. Sidechains use a different process. Usually, Ethereum is much smaller than Mainnet. It is risky for users.

Plasma Chain derives its security from the mainnet. This makes it more secure than a sidechain. Both sidechains and plasma chains can have different protocols, the difference being that plasma chains generate a Merkle root for each block on the Ethereum Mainnet. Block root is a small piece of information that we use to verify the transactions we make on the plasma chain. If the plasma chain is hacked, users can safely withdraw their crypto back to the mainnet using proper credentials.
